The significance of health promotion and disease prevention as a principal element of current national health care policy is emphasized in Healthy People 2020. Health promotion consists of all actions that encourage maximum spiritual, mental and physical functions despite of whether an individual is ill or well. The role and responsibility of the nurse in health promotion is to provide the individual, family, or community with an organized and comprehensive path leading to a healthier lifestyle. Considerations for the nurse in this role should include prioritizing the needs of the individual, family, or community and providing information that will encourage change and a better understanding of health. Teaching Plan As an instructor it is important to always be flexible in regards to the learning objectives and the teaching plan in an effort to meet the individual needs of each learner. The teaching plan will be implemented in the following order: · Presentation on good nutrition and daily exercise to include the following health benefits: decreased risk of problems related to type II diabetes, heart disease, and obesity.
