The Process for Developing Nursing Standards of Practice
The outline for developing a specialty nursing standards of practice developed by the American Nurses Association (ANA) help nurses to understand the steps that need to be taken (ANA, 2010). The first step involves the interested specialty nursing organization (SNO) sending a letter to ANA that would guarantee a “formal recognition of a nursing specialty. The letter also serves as an approval of their statement of the scope of practice and acknowledgment of their specialty practice standards. The SNO will the assign a publisher after the ANA explains the process. A team will be created by SNO to create or review a standard of practice. These standards may be explained in a document created by the SNO team before it submits it to the ANA Committee on Nursing Practice Standards and Guidelines for review. The final document is then forwarded to the Congress on Nursing Practice and Economics (CNPE) for action. In case it meets all the CNPE requirements, it is forwarded to the ANA Board of Directors to determine its applicability. Any nursing practice standards that pass all these steps are subject to continuous review after every 5 years (ANA, 2010, p. 9-10). Nursing Standards Of Practice Essay

The Entities Involved In Developing a Standard of Practice
From the above outline, it can be noted that the different entities involved in developing a standard of practice are the SNO, the ANA, the ANA Committee of Nursing Practice Standards and Guidelines, the CNPE, and the ANA Board of Directors. These entities have a responsibility to develop standards of practices that promote universal practice to all registered nurses. The American Nurses Association thus comes up with scopes and standards of practice and ensures they are enforced for all registered nurses. SNO also ensure that the scopes of practices are to provide universal guidelines in nursing practice (Nursing Scope Standards, 2010).

Introduction:
Standards are important aspects of nursing that a nurse must learn and implement every day for the rest of their nursing career. These standards provide for a nurse’s competence in the quality of care they deliver to the public. Standards offer a necessary guidance to nurses everywhere in an effort to ensure that people are treated correctly and ethically. Patients expect nurses to have a general knowledge of the medical realm and to know exactly what it is they –as nurses- are responsible for. Nurses need to have a sense of professionalism that enable the patient to feel safe and secure, knowing that a competent person is caring for him. A lack of professionalism does the opposite, making it impossible for a patient to trust or respect the nurse caring for him. Standards of nursing, if utilized correctly, give the nurse that sense of professionalism the patient is expecting. It insures for the safety of the patient and allows the nurse to provide quality health care that is expected of a medical professional.
Discussion:
The six standards of practice are very important. Under the first standard, assessment, the nurse evaluates health information related to the patient. This information could be a health issue such as asthma, or a psychological issue such as anxiety that is necessary knowledge needed before treatment can begin. Once this is accomplished the second standard, diagnosis, begins. Under this standard the nurse takes the information gained from the assessment and utilizes it to derive a diagnosis of the individual. Nursing Standards Of Practice Essay
