An electronic cigarette can be defined as an electronic device that simulates tobacco smoking. They are vaporizers that are powered by batteries whereby instead of the normal cigarettes smoke, the smoker inhales vapor. Therefore, using an electronic cigarette is known as vaping and not smoking. Although these electronic cigarettes are termed as less harmful as compared to the traditional cigarettes, they still contain various contents and chemicals that are toxic to the body and continuous use may lead to health complications. This paper will therefore looks at the dangers of using electronic cigarettes.
There are many health dangers that result from electronic cigarettes. The most common one is lung damage. The vapor that vapers inhale contains harmful chemicals and very tiny particles that are inhaled into the lungs and this may lead to inflammation of the lungs. Lung damage can even cause death when it is not treated and if the user continues to inhale the harmful chemicals. Some of the chemicals contained in the electronic cigarettes do not only cause lung damage but also are addictive (McConnell et al., 2017). For example, nicotine is very addictive regardless of how it is delivered. Nicotine is very addictive such that once someone is addicted, reversion is very difficult. More so, addiction to nicotine may lead to addition of other nicotine related products like alcohol, smoked cigarettes and other drugs. The Dangers of Electronic Cigarettes Essay
Electronic cigarettes can also lead to brain damage especially to young users. Young people whose brains are still growing are more vulnerable to brain damage due to the chemicals found in electronic cigarettes. They are more likely to get addicted because their brain is still developing. Nicotine in particular disrupts the normal development of the brain hence affecting the brain’s long term cognitive functioning (Noble, 2017). Therefore, when brain development is interfered with by harmful chemicals, the user may end up developing mental illnesses in the future such as depression.
Electronic cigarettes may also lead to cancerous tumor development especially on the lungs. When someone uses electronic cigarettes, the inhaled substances go to the lungs. Those harmful chemicals may lead to the development of cancerous tumors in the lungs and this may result to lung failure which results to death. Cancer is a very dangerous disease and also very expensive to treat. Also, electronic cigarettes can cause physical harm because they can explode when not handled well (Schroeder et al., 2026). in case a cigar explodes, it may cause unexpected fire which can cause more destruction.
In conclusion, electronic cigarettes are nothing better than the traditional cigarettes. It might be said that e-cigarettes are less harmful than the traditional cigarettes but they are harmful anyway. The long term effects of electronic cigarettes are so severe that the best way to avoid them is to stop vaping. The chemicals inhaled during vaping affect the normal functioning of the brain, lead to lung damage, tumors, and many more life threatening effects. The young people are more vulnerable to the effects of nicotine found in e-cigarettes because their brains are still growing. They get addicted easily and it is difficult to reverse from nicotine addiction. Therefore, young people should avoid taking electronic cigarettes at all means. The adults who take them should do so with moderation to avoid the adverse effects of electronic cigarettes. The Dangers of Electronic Cigarettes Essay
