As nurses there is a major possibility of crossing various types of people that may deal with addictions, and we need to know how to be an advocate for them. I found out that I did not know a lot about people with addictions or just how seriously it consumed them and their lives Addiction can be defined as, “A primary, chronic, neurobiological disease with genetic, psychosocial, and environmental factors influencing its development and manifestations. Addictive behaviors include one or more of the following: impaired control over drug use, compulsive use, continued use despite harm, and craving” (Potter 989). I was able to listen to people’s losses in life due to drug addiction, and I was able to hear victory stories of them becoming free of addiction. This was a turning point in my views toward people with addiction; hence I was able to grasp the pain, depression, and pure torture it is for them in their lives. I talked with ZS who was the group service representative, and he told me that they treat addiction like a disease that has consumed them. He also stressed that the group members technically face the battles with addiction on their own, and the meetings are there to offer much needed encouragement and hope.
