The coalition in my state is a nurse-led group of community leaders who offerdeliberate guidance through teamwork and grass-root efforts with crucial partners to modify the way in which care is delivered and facilitate wellness to the population of New Mexico. The organization’s first initiative is working with different colleagues in the state to institute the IOM recommendations and cultivate a culture of health. New Mexico action state-based coalition addresses issues such as cultivating healthier communities, facilitating interprofessional collaboration, increasing nursing diversity, obtaining workforce data and fostering effective nursing leadership. The second coalition’s initiative is working collaboratively with public health nurse leaders to increase the number of nurses working with community partners at the community level. Barriers to Advancement in New Mexico
The scope of practice barriers does not significantly face nurses in New Mexico. According to Intrator et al. (2015), nurse practitioners have full independent practice authority with state certification. Certified nurse practitioners practice independently and formulate decisions on the health care needs of individual patients, families, and communities, including the prescription of scheduled and controlled substances. The New Mexico state policy recognizes nurse practitioners as primary care providers, and they serve in acute care, chronic long term care, and end of life patient care. State laws and federal policies in the state, thus recognize nurses as independent primary care providers who are highly trained to provide a variety of clinical services in diverse settings. Other notable barriers facing nurses in the state are culture and outdated insurance reimbursement, models. The US continues to face significant disparities in health outcomes along the lines of race and ethnicity. Nursing advocates in the state are working to improve the above barriers. Their tireless efforts to modify the practice environments for nurses have contributed to recognizing nurse practitioners as independent clinicians. Nursing advocacy has also taken the lead role in reducing cultural disparities in the state. In New Mexico, cultural barriers to healthcare include compromised cultural relevance and distrust in healthcare systems and providers (Pfeifer, 2015). In turn, this results in disparities in healthcare utilization in some states. Nursing advocacy centers on culturally responsive clinical services to increase the rates of utilization among populations. Further, advocacy intends to increase the number of the insured population in the state.
