Week 4 Discussion Nurse/Patient Empowerment

Week 4 Discussion  Nurse/Patient Empowerment

As a nurse, you are the individual who has the ability to empower patients in the decision-making process pertaining to their health care. In addition, you are in a unique position to empower your nursing colleagues to improve job satisfaction and use performance indicator data from dashboards to effect social change. In this week’s Learning Resources, you examined both the National Database of Nursing Quality Indicators (NDNQI) and the key role nurses play as advocates for patient rights. To assist nurses in being better prepared for this role, programs such as Patient Care Partnership provide guidance. Week 4 Discussion  Nurse/Patient Empowerment For this Discussion, you will analyze the use of quality improvement data and discuss how this data can help empower both patients and nurses. Review the Patient Care Partnership information presented in this week’s Resources. In addition, reflect on the media presentation and the information shared by Ms. Manna on patients’ rights. By Day 3 Respond to the following: What are the best strategies the nurse can employ to empower patients and support patients’ rights to improve quality of care? (Some considerations to keep in mind may include: providing information on effectiveness, risks, and benefits of alternative treatments.) In what ways can NDNQI data from dashboards or quality improvement data be used to support nurse empowerment in practice? How has your institution empowered the nursing staff through the use of quality improvement data? Provide an example of how you have personally empowered either a patient or a fellow nurse. Support your response with references from the professional nursing literature. Note Initial Post: A 3-paragraph (at least 350 words) response. Be sure to use evidence from the readings and include in-text citations. Utilize essay-level writing practice and skills, including the use of transitional material and organizational frames. Avoid quotes; paraphrase to incorporate evidence into your own writing. A reference list is required. Use the most current evidence (usually ≤ 5 years old). By Day 7 Read two or more of your colleagues’ postings from the Discussion question (support with evidence if indicated). Respond with a comment that asks for clarification, provides support for, or contributes additional information to two or more of your colleagues’ postings. Post a Discussion entry on three different days of the week. Refer to the Discussion Rubric found in the Course Information and Grading Criteria area. Learning Resources Required Readings Brown, D. Patient care outcomes are the most valuable feedbacks expected in all the care settings and entirely dependent on the quality of care provided. Patient engagement is the element that initiates this process of care and enables the care provider to evaluate the patient’s concerns to identify the appropriate intervention. Patient engagement should be extended to facilitate a proper understanding of the health concern and then achieve the expected outcome (Agner & Braun, 2018). Therefore, each patient must participate actively in designing these goals because they are the primary care receivers.

Strategies to Empower Patients and Support Patients’ Rights

A teach-back and ask me technique is a widely used clinical practice technique to empower and foster patient’s rights. This technique has two steps that interdependently help patients realize their health concern and possible interventions. The teach-back step is actualized by the care provider who provides a detailed report from evaluating the patient’s information. This includes the investigations done, diagnosis and possible treatment plans for a sick patient.

Exhaustively the care provider will describe how they reached on those decisions and how to manage the problem by explaining all the options and the risks associated with each option (Guglielmi et al., 2014). Generally, the nurse promotes the right to information and safety and upholding all the ethical principles.

The ask me step is the patient’s opportunity to express their satisfaction with the information provided to them. They may not have understood some info, and they have the right to ask the care provider to make clarifications of the same. This step of the technique is crucial for the patient to be certain about what they expect. A misunderstanding can often attract a legal issue because the patient can receive the care they did not expect (Guglielmi et al., 2014). This two-step technique allows the patient to autonomously participate in developing a management plan for their health concern.

Role of NDNQI

In 1998 the America Nurses Association ANA established the NDNQI database to improve the nursing body of knowledge and practice to improve quality of patient care. (NDNQI) data provides a platform that is beneficial to nurse’s practice in all dynamics. It evaluates the quality outcomes of nursing and reviews literature compared to evidence-based practices (Isis Montalvo, 2007). (NDNQI) identifies the quality indicators as, hospital-acquired infections (HAPI), pain management, the injury falls, job satisfaction, pressure injuries, nursing turn over and vacancy rates, and assaults among psychiatric patients. It also evaluates nurses’ welfare and their jobs, focusing on the working environment, job satisfaction, remuneration, and personal experiences.

Utilization of NDNQI to Empower Nurses

Data from (NDNQI) enables the nursing leadership to evaluate their performance in providing patient care. Health care facilities can use the information to set policy and reflect on their goals to ensure they improve patients’ quality of care. Vermeulen, & van 2016) describe that (NDNQI) offers organizational leadership an opportunity to review the data to determine areas in care that need improvement. Such issues include training, identifying gaps in knowledge, reasons for increased nursing turnover, balancing nursing duties to reduce overworking, promotions, posting nurses to places of interest, giving rewards when necessary, and always encouraging nurses to speak up when in need. Week 4 Discussion  Nurse/Patient Empowerment

In a clinical setting, a fifteen-year-old boy was brought by his parents to the ED with sudden sharp pain, on the right lower abdomen, fever, vomiting and malaise. His parents were distraught because their son had developed a sudden sharp pain on the abdomen, and his condition changed abruptly. Investigations were done, and he was diagnosed with acute appendicitis and required to go for an emergency appendectomy. This worsened their anxiety, but the intervention of the physician and primary nurse calmed the parents. They provided adequate information about the procedure and all the safety issues related. After the session, they signed the consent form and patiently waited for the outcome.
