In the implementation of the Covid-19 change project at the Kingston Healthcare facility in California, there are lessons that have been learnt during the professional capstone and practicum period. Discoveries about professional nursing practice have been made, personal strengths and weaknesses have been identified, and – most importantly – course competencies have been achieved. The purpose of this paper is to reflect on the personal skills and knowledge that have been gained during this period, with reference to eleven core competency areas.Implementation of Covid-19 Change Project

  1. New practice approaches: Covid-19 was an entirely new disease which required a completely new approach to nursing practice. I have witnessed firsthand how the wearing of PPEs has now become part of standard nursing practice when handling patients, for instance. This is a new practice approach compared to the period before the pandemic.
  2. Interprofessional collaboration: Given the scale of the Covid-19 pandemic, it has been practically impossible to work alone in isolation in a bubble. From diagnosing Covid-19 to isolating the patient to giving them empirical treatment; there has been a great need for interprofessional collaboration between frontline nurses, laboratory technicians, pathologists, and physicians (Green & Johnson, 2015). All these professional categories have worked together to make any interventions such as the change proposal at Kingston succeed.
  3. Healthcare delivery and clinical systems: It is generally accepted after the IOM report of 1999 titled To Err Is Human that technology is an inevitable helper to reduce preventable human errors in healthcare (Palatnik, 2016). In line with this reality, I have experienced how the electronic health record (EHR) system at Kingston Healthcare is used to capture patient data and their Covid-19 status. Data on immunization is also effectively captured and errors are minimized. Because of this, retrieval of patient information and medical records has been easy, fast, efficient, and convenient. This is because of the EHR as a dependable clinical system.
  4. Ethical considerations in healthcare: I have seen, experienced, and practiced the application of the ethical principles of autonomy, beneficence, nonmaleficence, and justice (Haswell, 2019) to all the patients who have presented themselves at the Kingston Healthcare in California.
  5. Practices of culturally sensitive care: I have also experienced and seen great nursing practice that is transcultural in nature. This is a skill that I have also adopted and that has made me culturally sensitive and competent.
  6. Ensuring the integrity and dignity of all the patients at Kingston Healthcare: The privacy of patients and patient data has been guaranteed and this has generated trust and confidence of the patients in the nursing staff at Kingston Healthcare.
  7. Population health concerns: The population health concerns that I have experienced in the past weeks include the fear that the new Covid-19 strains from Brazil, the UK, and South Africa would derail the vaccination efforts ongoing at the Kingston Healthcare at the moment. There is a fear that these may render the Pfizer BioNTech and Moderna vaccines ineffective. Counselling and reassurance has been effectively used to handle this issue at Kingston Healthcare.
  8. Place of technological innovations in the improvement of patient outcomes: I have experienced how innovative technologies such as mobile phone applications can be used to interact with and monitor Covid-19 patients virtually, improving patient outcomes (Fedele et al., 2017; McGonigle & Mastrian, 2017).
  9. Healthcare policy: Healthcare policies are now being implemented such as the new President Biden roadmap for Covid-19 vaccination in the first 100 days of his administration.Implementation of Covid-19 Change Project
  10. Leadership and economic models: My preceptors have demonstrated immense transformational leadership (Choi et al., 2016) that is inspiring; and I have also learnt these leadership skills and applying them to the capstone project.
  11. Health disparities: Lastly, I have observed and increased my knowledge about health disparities in the United States. Currently, Covid-19 is disproportionately affecting marginalized communities like African Americans and Hispanics because of unequal access to quality healthcare.
