Health care culture is a fundamental aspect of healthcare since it illustrates shared approaches, behaviors, and perspectives to the management of health in healthcare institutions. Since health care culture encompasses a mindset and a set of practices, it greatly affects other aspects of the services provided to patients. The paper discusses health care culture and how the Christian worldview can be used to improve ethical practices.

A definition of health care culture, including culture of excellence and safety

Culture is defined as the way an individual or a group of individuals do things. Health care culture refers to a mindset (ways of thinking) and a set of practices (ways of doing) that is widely shared by a health care organization’s staff when it comes to providing care to patients.   Safety culture is the summary of beliefs, behaviors, attitudes, and knowledge that staff shares about the basic significance of the well-being of the clients they serve, supported by structures and systems that reinforces the focus on patient safety. Improvement, trust, and reporting are the three reciprocally imperatives for the achievement and maintenance of a culture of safety (Sanchez et al., 2018).

A culture of excellence is defined as the way of working and thinking in an organization that results in a sense of aliveness in all people in the organization. a culture of excellence does not refer to a set of rules to be followed, but it is a choice, derived and manifested a devotion to go beyond the ordinary. Examples of principles for building a culture of excellence and safety

Developing a culture of safety and excellence can be conceptualized as a collection of interventions rooted within the principles of behavior change, teamwork, and leadership rather than a team or process. Strategies for promoting a culture of safety and excellence might entail system-level changes, such as those in reporting or governance structure, for instance, executive walk rounds, interdisciplinary rounding, and team training. Team training is a structured scheme for optimization of teamwork processes, such as leadership, collaboration, cooperation, and communication. Rosen et al. (2018) indicate that teamwork training is focused on the achievement of attitudes, skills, and knowledge that underlie successful teamwork.

Executive walk rounds/ patient safety leadership walk rounds is a strategy that engages the leadership of the organization directly with staff at the front line of providing care. Saadati et al. (2016) assert that during a walk round the staff and executives discuss issues related to safety issues and institute plans to improve safety issues suck as building safety, patient safety, equipment, and safety culture.  Walk rounds are intended to show that leaders are committed to safety, foster psychological safety and trust, and offer support for providers to address issues that threaten patient safety.

The role of various stakeholders in improving health care culture

Leaders and subordinates play crucial roles in improving health care culture.  Health care professionals have the role of raising or reporting patient safety concerns while leaders have the role of facilitating an openness culture within the health care environment. According to Azizi et al. (2017),  healthcare leadership plays a vital role in shaping organizational culture and a culture of openness.  Good leaders do not cultivate a culture of blame and they are very important in building an atmosphere where the team members can comfortably speak up and report errors to enable corrective measures to be taken and others to learn. For the culture of openness to be created, the hierarchy should be flattened through the establishment of a culture where every team member is respected, regardless of their position in the organization, and all team members are treated respectfully and with equal consideration.

How Christian worldview (CWV) principles might be used by health care organizations to improve ethical practices

Health care organizations can use CWV principles of human dignity and common good to improve ethical practices and provide Christ-centered care.  Providing Christ-centered care is a demonstration of a personal work of extending love to one’s neighbor as the Bible teaches us in Mark 12:31. According to Cruz and  Robinson  (2017), as a health care organization/ professional enters deeper into caring for the patient, the attitude in a natural way tends to shift toward taking stewardship in respecting the sacredness rather than being responsible for ensuring people are healthy.Cultural Competence in Health Care

Each human has the dignity of having God’s image and thus health care professionals care for their neighbors/ patients’ health because they are valuable in society. By considering the human dignity of each individual, health care organizations can provide personalized care and better care plans. Medical care thus becomes a scheme to carefully providing care to patients identifying their inherent worth as humans with God’s image (Cruz & Robinson, 2017).

Healthcare organizations can use the Christian principle of the common good to deliver care to all members regardless of their age, sexual orientation, gender, religion, or ethnicity. Cruz and Robinson (2017) indicate that delivering care for the common good does not support the idea of the provider caught up in his or her own concerns and interests.  Provision of care for the common good is also opposed to the notion of ensuring care is first delivered well to individuals who run and support the system it and their individuals who are unable or choose not to directly contribute receive care afterward.

Examples of how the integration of faith learning and work at GCU can be implemented by individuals to improve health care culture

GCU is committed to the integration of faith and learning (IFL).   Provision of care based on Christian worldview principles is one of how the IFL and work at GCU can be implemented by individuals to improve health care culture. When providing care, individuals can benchmark identifiable Christian worldview principles with the care being provided.  Another example is opening and operating regional academic medical centers, health facilities, and community-based hospitals.  Having religiously branded care facilities, clinics, and hospitals in communities is a way for GCU to speak a ubiquitous understanding that the love of God must and can be externalized, via the agency of religious learning institutions, to meet the needs of human beings in the world, including and particularly healthcare and health needs.

A culture of excellence and safety are aspects of health care culture that are directly linked to the quality of care.
