Specialization within any professional practice implies having a specific niche and opportunity to become an expert. In nursing, specialization involves becoming an expert in the nursing field, and influencing health care outcomes, education and practice. Each specialization in nursing has a leadership designation since it leverages specific interests and qualities to shape professional career advancement options (Stewart & DeNisco, 2019). Through pursuing a specialization, a nurses derives personal benefits for career advancements and shapes the future of the health care industry. Given the many changes in the US health care system, it would be prudent for nurses to specialize. Whether pursuing an education and/or leadership roles that would allow for experiences to be imparted to a new generation of nurses even as changes are facilitated within a health care organization, specialization is necessary (Zaccagnini & White, 2017). The present paper offers a discussion on nursing specialization.
Explanation of your choice of a nursing specialty within the program.
There are many specialization areas in the nursing profession, all of which provide different career advancement opportunities. Through specialization, the nurse is provided with an opportunity to pursue career ambitions. Each specialization offers a leadership designation (Chism, 2016). Personally, my choice of nursing specialty is clinical nurse leadership since I am interested in functioning as a team member and leader who applies solid skills and knowledge, as well as exercising good judgement in providing care to patients. I am particularly interested in practicing as a psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner (PMHNP) as this is an advanced practice registered nurse role that would allow me to provide a variety of mental health services in a wide range of settings.
I understand that a PMHNP diagnoses and treats mental illness thereby helping to address the needs of one of the more vulnerable patient populations. Unlike other groups of patients, persons suffering from mental illness will typically have cognitive deficiencies that reduce their capacity for making logical and informed decisions. I seek to ensure that this group of patients receives the required care, and their interests be presented in different forums through advocacy efforts.NURS_6003_Module06_Week10_Discussion
Besides that, psychiatric nursing/medicine is an imprecise science and I am interested in exploring the science and making new discoveries. Unlike other medical and nursing practice where care approaches result in defined outcomes, psychiatry offers vague connections between approaches applied and outcomes. This is understandable since no two patients will present for psychiatric care with the same mental health problems, have the same interventions applied and expect the same results. To be more precise, psychiatric nursing is a challenging practice area that requires the nurse to always be innovative (Mandos & Reinhold, 2020).
Additionally, psychiatric nursing has significant opportunities for career advancements. Unlike other medical conditions that could be challenging but be cured with a straightforward intervention, mental health concerns do not have cures and cannot be wholly eliminated. This implies that psychiatric health conditions would always present so that PMHNP will always be needed. As a PMHNP, I expect that my services will always be needed. It is because of the discussed reasons that I chose to specialize in psychiatric nursing (Kosicek, 2014).

Like any other career choice, choosing to specialize in psychiatric nursing was not an easy one to make. This was because of three reasons. The first reason was that I sought to choose the perfect career fit that met all my needs and played to my strengths as I had the fear of having a disappointing career. As long as I did not make a choice, I was able to maintain the fantasy that an ideal career exists for me out there and I am yet to find that career. Once I made the career choice, I would grapple with the good and bad of that decision, and up facing some disappointment. I addressed this difficulty by doing informational interviews with nurses in the different specializations of interest already working in the field to understand how they spend their work days. Their combined years of experiences allowed me to better evaluate the different nursing professions (Kulcsár, Dobrean & Gati, 2020).
The second reason was that I had a fear of making mistakes. I wanted a guarantee that my career decision will be the right one, and I would not regret choices made or missed opportunities. I addressed this difficulty by reading biographies and autobiographies of nurses I seek to emulate in order to understand their career trajectories. Thirdly, I had an educational barrier to pursuing a career in psychiatric nursing. Such a career requires at least a Masters in Nursing level of education and completion of psychiatric nursing study units. Making the career choice required that I have the necessary level of education. I tackled this difficulty by finding lower level jobs in the nursing career field of interest to familiarize myself with my areas of interest before pursuing advanced education to make a career in psychiatric nursing a reality (Kulcsár, Dobrean & Gati, 2020).NURS_6003_Module06_Week10_Discussion

My chosen specialty is a career in psychiatric nursing as a PMHNP. There are two professional organizations that are affiliated with PMHNP specialization, and which I seek to be a member. The first organization is the American Psychiatric Nurses Association (APNA). This is an organization that was founded in 1986 and is the largest professional membership organization committed to addressing the interests of PMHNP. Membership in the organization is exclusive to psychiatric nurses at all levels of education and occurs after paying a subscription fee. Membership in the organization serves two main interests. Firstly, it helps with collegiality since the organization disseminates current information on topics of interest to psychiatric nursing. Secondly, it offers opportunities for continuing education. The organization has well established programs for providing education to PMHNP to include conferences, the APNA Annual Clinical Psychopharmacology Institute, and APNA eLearning Center (American Psychiatric Nurses Association, 2020).

The second organization is the International Society of Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurses (ISPN). This is an international society of psychiatric nurses. It was formed in 1999 after the amalgamation of four independent organizations. One of its significant interests is addressing the population needs for the international and diverse mental health workforce to include all forms of injustice, bias, discrimination and racism. Membership in the organization requires a subscription fee and is open to all professional registered nurses with interests in psychiatric nursing. Membership in the organization offers significant benefits to include an annual international conferences, and opportunities for business meetings to address issues affecting the profession and practice.
