Core Values

            One of my core values as a leader is that I am a caring person, and I tend to think of others and their positions. I would like to think that I am empathetic in nature, and this aspect helps me to guide others as a leader and inspire them because I can empathize with them as human beings. Another core value I have is that I am courageous and I never am afraid of facing challenges. I find challenges to be learning experiences that teach me something about myself, which I use to improve my position as an individual, and as a leader. I believe that I have integrity as a core value, which guides me to always do the right thing and observe morality and fairness when interacting with my team mates and other people in my life. I believe that a leader should demonstrate integrity, for their leadership to have a positive impact on the teams they offer guidance. Mission Statement

            “To constantly strive to be a courageous and transformational leader, who inspires those entrusted to me, and to ensure that I leave a positive impact on everyone with whom I interact.”

My mission statement is inspired by the concept of transformational leadership, which according to Sfantou et al. (2017) is the best leadership style within a healthcare setting, considering leaders who practice this style tend to enhance quality of care provided to patients, and in turn, promote positive health outcomes. A transformational leader is caring, empathetic, and inspirational to their teammates. Therefore, I use this leadership style as a guide to my leadership behavior and ultimately, for my personal mission statement.

Clifton Strengths Analysis

            Based on my Clifton Strength Analysis, I discovered that I am a restorative leader, where I prefer to solve problems and I am energized by challenges. This trait reveals the fact that I am confident in fixing problems and restoring things to their initial glory. I also learned from this assessment that I am guided by the theme of focus, where I set goals that serve as my compass. Focus helps me become a valuable team member, and an efficient leader. The assessment also revealed to me that I am futuristic and tend to have positive thoughts and perspectives about life in general, which is important because it is uplifting for others. This trait is critical for a leader, especially one who practices the transformational leadership style that Sfantou et al. (2017) recommend. Strengthening Key Behaviors

            One of the behaviors I need to strengthen is to avoid being too pragmatic in situations that pragmatism do not apply. Winkler et al. (2016) contend that one of the most important and effective leadership behaviors is reducing level of control on the team members as a leader. By being too pragmatic, I exercise too much control and grow my need for controlling situations that may be beyond my scope. Therefore, I believe that I need to understand that sometimes I cannot fix everything, and perhaps letting go of the need to control would enhance my leadership skills and improve my relationships with my team members.

Another key behavior I need to change is to avoid being too future oriented and try focus on the present. Focusing too much on the future can be detrimental to leadership because I would miss the present issues affecting my team, which would therefore, lead to unfavorable outcomes in the future about which I worry.

Development Plan

            Moving forward, to improve on my constant need to remain in control by being too pragmatic, I plan to enroll into a short course on emotional intelligence. This course will help me learn how to balance perspective and treat others with empathy, understand their positions, and understand that sometimes, letting others contribute to ideas is not a sign of losing control and that it is human nature to feel emotionally affected in the course of duty. Allowing others to be human is critical and will help me reduce the limited empathy and need for control at the workplace.

To avoid being future oriented, I plan to focus my energy on current events, instead of future prospects, which can be blinding to current realities. Rowtiz (2016) contends that a leader should think about the future, but focus on the present to achieve the desired future. Focusing too much on the future is detrimental because it reduces the time and effort required in the present, to achieve a desired goal. Correcting these two behaviors will help me achieve my personal mission because with enhanced emotional intelligence and focus on the present, I can inspire my team mates to achieve the set goals while fostering a positive relationship with them.Valuable Leadership Philosophy Examples

Many of us can think of leaders we have come to admire, be they historical figures, pillars of the industry we work in, or leaders we know personally. The leadership of individuals such as Abraham Lincoln and Margaret Thatcher has been studied and discussed repeatedly. However, you may have interacted with leaders you feel demonstrated equally competent leadership without ever having a book written about their approaches.

What makes great leaders great? Every leader is different, of course, but one area of commonality is the leadership philosophy that great leaders develop and practice. A leadership philosophy is basically an attitude held by leaders that acts as a guiding principle for their behavior. Develop and submit a personal leadership philosophy that reflects what you think are characteristics of a good leader. Use the scholarly resources on leadership you selected to support your philosophy statement. Your personal leadership philosophy should include the following:

  • A description of your core values.
  • A personal mission/vision statement.
  • An analysis of your Clifton Strengths Assessment summarizing the results of your profile
  • A description of two key behaviors that you wish to strengthen.
  • A development plan that explains how you plan to improve upon the two key behaviors you selected and an explanation of how you plan to achieve your personal vision.
