• Select one nursing theory and one counseling theory to best guide your practice in psychotherapy.

The nursing theory that best guides my practice is Virginia Henderson’s Need Theory. The theory postulates that nursing intervention should focus on increasing the personal independence of the patient even as he or she is hospitalized. In applying nursing intervention, the intention is to expedite the patient’s recovery by focusing on four key needs. Firstly, social needs that cover recreational needs and accomplishment. Secondly, spiritual needs that relate to worship and faith. Thirdly, psychological needs that highlight handling fears, learning, eating and dressing. Finally, physiological needs that cover areas relating to the environment, dress, eating and sleeping. By integrating this theory in practice, I expect to create practical and personalized nursing intervention plans that supplement the strength of the patient while enabling he/she to gradually become more independent and eventual regain self-care ability (Masters, 2020).

The counseling theory that best guides my practice is humanistic theory that emphasized helping patients to achieve their highest potential. It focuses on the broader dimensions of the human experience. Carl Rogers’ humanistic approach, specifically client-centered theory is particularly useful as it guides nurses to create a supportive climate that enables patients to honestly and openly look at themselves. In applying this theory, I would display important qualities to help the patient recover. This includes displaying genuineness through sincere communication, accurate empathy through skillful restatement and listening, and unconditional regard through full acceptance (Butts & Rich, 2018).

The two theories were selected because they enable the delivery of patient centered care by focusing on addressing what each individual patient actually needs. In fact, the two theories that have been identified help to permeate patient-centered care into nursing care systems while encompassing a cultural shift in care delivery. This shift is important to transforming nursing care into an efficient and effective service that uses the least amount of resources for the best care outcomes. In addition, the shift helps to improve the nurse-patient dyad by allowing for creation of therapeutic alliance, perceives the patient as a person, presents a biopsychosocial perspective, shares responsibility and power, and perceives medical personnel as persons (Fix et al., 2018).

There are three goal for the practicum experience. The first goal is to establish learning objectives that are individualized to the nursing area of interest. The second goal is to develop skills and knowledge in nursing practice areas of interest. The third goal is to apply critical thinking and problem solving to adapt scientific knowledge to clinical nursing practice. There are three objectives for the practicum experience. The first objective is preparing a practicum report that summarizes the lessons learned from the practicum experience. The second objective is gaining experiencing in interacting and communicating with patients, medical personnel and other stakeholders with the health care environment.
