Experience in the Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) Program
The FNP program was designed to equip nurses with advanced nursing skills in family care, as well as serving as a primary care provider alongside a physician. While enrolled in this program, I gathered vast experience both professionally and at a personal level. Professionally, I gained skills on how to diagnose, manage, and treat various illnesses. Learning through such modules made me feel as qualified as physicians are. I learned various techniques of diagnosis, medication prescription, and how to handle patients with a variety of ailments successfully, hence, reducing the workload for physicians. I believe that learning this skill qualifies me as an FNP who can serve a family as their primary care provider, unless in medical situations that require attention from a medical specialist.
Undertaking this program also exposed me to learning how to develop a variety of disease prevention methods and health promotion behavior. Experiences Based on Benner’s Novice-to-Expert Model
This model proposes that expert nurses tend to develop their professional skills and knowledge of caring for patients with time, after undergoing proper educational background and clinical experience. As such, nurses go through five stages of developing clinical competence that include the novice, advanced beginner, competent, proficient, and expert (Thomas & Kellgren, 2017). My current position is a registered nurse to family nurse practitioner, which would make me proficient in terms of clinical competence.
Some of experience during this FNP program has been at novice level, considering the FNP program was new to me at the beginning. My clinical experience and knowledge with family care was limited, hence, I would consider myself at novice level when learning about some health promotion habits and communicating with the family caregivers on how to manage the patient. I also learned how to obtain information from clients, which I believe I was proficient considering I have lived within a multicultural community. Therefore, I have learned a lot about culture, and interacting with people from various cultural backgrounds was relatively easy for me. Therefore, I was at proficient level in terms of communicating with patients from different cultures and obtaining information from them to facilitate care delivery.
Applying Strategies
One of the strategies I learned in this FNP program was cultural etiquette when interacting with patients from the minority groups. I believe that strategies such as knowing how to greet the patients in their language is an effective strategy to develop rapport with patients when delivering family care. Additionally, the rest of the family members also become more open to nurses who are in touch with cultural etiquette and awareness, hence improving their outcomes because of improved communication.
