Reflection on Family Nurse Practitioner Program Essay

Attending the Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) Program has been a steep learning experience. I have gained the confidence to play a bigger role in influencing patient outcomes as I learned to assess, diagnose and treat patients across the lifespan. In fact, the program has readied me to become an advanced practice nurse with the capacity to manage restorative care, health promotion and disease prevention in patients of all ages. Firstly, I have learnt to manage patient care as I experienced the rewards and challenges associated with the diagnosis, treatment and oversight of patients encountered in the practical aspects of the program. Secondly, I have learnt to diagnose and manage the primary care needs for adults, adolescents and children thus enabling me to develop confidence in handling patients of all ages. Thirdly, I have learnt to advocate for the health of my patients. With the increasing knowledge levels, I have become more aware of the needs of my patients as well as the unique position that nurses occupy and can leverage to address the needs of patients. I have learnt how to advocate for my patients by screening for common disorders, and promoting their wellness through compassionate education, diagnosis and treatment. Finally, the experience has enabled me to engage with and learn from an experienced faculty with advanced degrees. The education experience has enabled me to experience a shift in professional competence that can be molded along Benner’s novice to expert model. The model shifts from novice to beginner, advanced beginner, competent, proficient and expert levels. Attending the program has seen me shift from being a registered nurse with a Bachelor’s degree to a FNP with a Master’s degree. The advance in education attainment has enabled me to gain more professional knowledge and insight. Prior to joining the program, I was an advanced beginner as identified by the model. That is because, as a registered nurse, I had previous nursing experiences and the ability to use discretionary judgment in providing professional care. Although I had clinical knowledge, I was in need of assistance and support in the clinical area. Having attended the program, I am now at the competent stage of the model. The program has enabled me to see nursing care actions in terms of plans and goals even as I function in an organized and efficient manner due to deliberate, conscious planning. However, as I have just gained FNP qualifications, I still lack the flexibility and multitasking talent that characterizes practitioners at the proficient stage of the model. I expect to reach the proficient level with more practice experience as I develop a holistic understand of care situations at hand and improve on my decision-making process. My intention is to reach the expert, which would give me the confidence and intuitive grasp of complex care situations so that I am able to independently accomplish what needs to be done (Chang & Daly, 2016).Reflection on Family Nurse Practitioner Program Essay.

I expect that the knowledge and experiences acquired through the program will enable me contribute to current and future professional nursing science. Firstly, it will enable me to become an expert FNP who is able to provide better patient care thus increasing the credibility of the nursing profession. Secondly, the advanced education qualifications offer me the qualifications for leadership and management positions in which I can be instrumental in developing important policies. Thirdly, it offers me the qualifications to participate in and lead research activities thereby helping to improve the knowledge available to the nursing profession (Butts & Rich, 2018).

The program has enabled me to meet the State Board of Nursing and American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP) requirements for FNP specialization. There are four basic requirements for practicing as a FNP. The first requirement is having an active registered nurse license. The second requirement is the completion of a master of science in nursing program with a specialization in FNP. The third requirement is taking the certification examination administered by the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners Certification Board (AANPCB), or the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC). The final requirement is having an advanced practice registered nurse (APRN) license for the state (Online FNP Programs, 2020). I am yet to fulfil the third and fourth requirements.
