Transition to Graduate Study for Nursing Part 3: Academic and Professional Integrity
The MSN postgraduate student nurse is in the middle of higher learning to become a distinguished advanced practice registered nurse or APRN. An APRN is a specialist who takes care of a particular patient population with a particular focus. For this reason, there are high expectations on the MSN student in terms of both academic and professional integrity. Postgraduate higher education is associated with a lot of writing that is expected to be original work. There is a lot of research that the student does in addition to many class assignments, most of which are individual in nature. At Walden University, some of these assignments are undertaken in the form of group discussions where students post their writings on particular topics for colleagues to respond to. This is an ingenious way of sharing scholarly ideas and thoughts by the student as designed by the university. This paper is a look at the meaning of and relationship between academic integrity and writing in a higher education sense. It also examines the relationship between scholarly ethics and professional practices, as well as the role of the different tools that are currently available to help with enforcing academic integrity. These tools include SafeAssign and Grammarly.NURS 6003N Week 5 Assignment
Section 1: The Connection Between Academic and Professional Integrity
The Relationship Between Academic Integrity and Writing
It is the landmark report by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) and the Institute of Medicine (IOM) titled The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health in 2010 that recommended that nurses be given opportunities to advance their education (Hooper, 2016). This is one of the reasons why Walden University is recognized as a leading university in offering postgraduate nursing education. According to Boykins & Gilmore (2012), online education is one of the most appropriate means of providing further education to the busy nurse who works and also has family obligations. However, one of the most important challenges with online education is the aspect of ensuring academic integrity. Writing in an academic sense means all the work produced by the student such as the MSN student and presented for the award of marks that goes towards the successful completion of the course. Academic integrity is the production of writings that reflect your own thoughts and not stolen ideas as a student of higher learning. The relationship between the two is that academic integrity is the production of written academic work that contains no stolen ideas and that correctly attributes borrowed ideas to their rightful owners (Waghid & Davids, 2019; Morris, 2018). The absence of academic integrity is plagiarism, which is punishable in institutions of higher learning.
The Relationship Between Scholarly Ethics and Professional Practices
Scholarly ethics refers to the academic practice where a student of higher learning such as an MSN student consistently produces writing that is not plagiarized or stolen from others without proper citation and paraphrasing. As an example, the nurse who is an MSN student at Walden University will not remain a student forever. The goal is to graduate and transition into becoming a professional APRN who is practicing. As a rule, one practices what they have learnt. It therefore follows that a student nurse with no scholarly ethics (avoidance of plagiarism) will become an APRN whose professional practices are questionable because of lack of integrity. This is an APRN who will be taking shortcuts and cutting corners in managing patients (Shepherd, 2017). In a nutshell, they will not be following the professional code of conduct as presented by the American Nurses Association (ANA, 2010). This is the relationship there is between professional practices and scholarly ethics.
The Role Grammarly, SafeAssign, and Paraphrasing Play in Ensuring Academic Integrity
One of the most encouraging things about Walden University is that the Student Assistance Program is so student-friendly that most of the problems that students have are solved within no time. One of the areas in which the university has been of great help to us has been how to avoid lacking academic integrity. On this, the university has introduced us to tools such as Grammarly, Turnitin, and SafeAssign to help us in the task (Walden University, 2020). Grammarly does not only check grammatical and semantic errors but also assists with citation of sources and checking for plagiarism. On the other hand, SafeAssign has a repository of previous student papers with which it compares recently submitted student papers to check for similarity. A high index of similarity means that the submitted paper has been copied from the previous student paper in the repository (Walden University, 2020). That would mean plagiarism and a lack of academic integrity. Paraphrasing is the art of borrowing another person’s ideas but putting them in different words while at the same time citing the original source.NURS 6003N Week 5 Assignment

Section 2: Strategies for Maintaining Integrity of Work
The strategy I intend to use to maintain integrity and ethics of my academic work as a student of the MSN program is to always write original content. This I intend to mix with properly cited and attributed sources that would be providing a background and rationale to my academic arguments. Also, the strategy I intend to use to maintain integrity and ethics of my professional work as an APRN throughout my career is to follow the nursing code of conduct and standards of practice to the letter. I am also going to be guided by the Christian worldview and values underpinned by love for one another. This will make me respect patients and their beliefs by being culturally sensitive, letting them have a say in their care (autonomy) and avoiding causing them intentional harm (nonmaleficence).
Conclusion
Academic integrity is crucial for any nursing student but particularly for postgraduate MSN students who will soon be practicing APRNS. The importance is that having academic integrity enables the student to become a responsible professional with professional ethics. In other words, ethical clinical nursing practice is premised on having academic integrity when one was a student. The MSN student at Walden University must therefore show proof of academic integrity if they are to graduate into APRNs whose professional practice is ethical.
