NSG 696 – Method for Evidence Based Practice
Practicum: Evidence-Based Practice and Evaluation of the Project Through Measurable Goals
Overview: Dr. Marcia Stanhope (2020) explained that evidence-based public health practice refers to those decisions made by using the best available evidence, data and information systems and program frameworks; engaging community stakeholders in the decision-making process; evaluating the results; and then disseminating that information to those who can use the information.
Practicum Discussion: This week, your assignment will be to incorporate all of the information you have gathered from the community—including the population itself, health data, interviews/conversations with interested community members, and your community assessment, including your Windshield Survey—as well as what you have gathered from scholarly literature to propose measurable interventions. Measurable interventions mean that the results can be measured through some data that could be collected (Stanhope, 2020). This requires thinking in terms of actions and then measuring results. An evaluation of interventions is important to see whether or not they are effective in solving a health care problem. Remember, you will need to use the data you gathered to determine whether or not a problem exists in your community and to then determine whether your interventions might be effective.NSG 696 – Method for Evidence Based Practice

Practicum: Evidence-Based Practice and Evaluation of the Project Through Measureable Goals
Opioid abuse is a significant concern for East Market District community in Louisville City, Kentucky State. Although the East Market District is undergoing a regeneration from the significant business investments being made, there is a concern that the continued gang activity, influx of businesses, and increasing population have presented opportunity for opioid abuse.
Identify one evidence-based behavior change that would promote health in your selected population.
Overcoming opioid abuse requires that the client/patient be motivated to break the drug habit before the required change can occur. The appropriate behavior change is this case is opioid abstinence and punishment for using drugs with positive reinforcement being applied. This requires that the client engage in acceptable social activities such as playing games, reading or working to keep the mind away from drugs. Filling up the time after giving up drugs is important after previously spending a significant amount of time getting and using the drugs. If the time is not used wisely, then the client is likely to become bored with nothing to fill up the time. This apathy could trigger a relapse (Helming, Shields & Avino, 2020).NSG 696 – Method for Evidence Based Practice
Suggest one specific culturally sensitive, evidence-based, measureable intervention to address the health problem for your selected population.
An appropriate culturally sensitive, evidence-based, measurable intervention is enrolling the client to a resident drug treatment program. This involves making use of inpatient care that places the client within a controlled environment where access to drugs is limited and treatment services are offered to included detoxification medication and counseling services. This intervention provides round the clock (24-hour) care to help the client to achieve and maintain recovery from opioid abuse. The services offered help the client to develop tools and capability to avoid using opioids even after leaving the program. This is important since East Market District is an urban setting with minimal social support for recovering opioid abusers as there is a presence of gang activity and drug trade (Csiernik, 2016).
Think in terms of measuring outcomes. What outcomes would you expect to see once the intervention(s) are in place?
An expected outcome is reduced use of opioids. Clients who successfully go through the program are expected to stop using opioids and remain free from drugs. A relapse would indicate that the intervention failed (Csiernik, 2016).
