Leadership Style
Self-Assessment
Personality Test
I selected this personality test because I needed to find out my personality type and identify my strengths and weaknesses so that I can strengthen my weaknesses. Many people have told me in the past that I can be the life of the party, and I needed to confirm this because sometimes I feel like I am deeply introverted. The 16 types of personality test revealed that I have the entertainer personality, specifically the entertainer, observant, feeling, and prospecting (ESFP) trait (Engler, 2014). From the test, this personality denotes a person who loves to enjoy vibrant experiences, engages in their life eagerly, takes pleasure to discover the unknown, and can be very social with others.Leadership Style Reflective Essay.
The Cultural Competence Self Test
This test examines a person’s ability to interact with people from other cultures. I took this test because I wanted to establish my performance regarding multi-cultural interaction. As a highly social person, I tend to interact a lot with people from other cultures than mine. Therefore, I needed to establish how culturally aware and competent I am when interacting with others. This test revealed that I frequently acknowledge patient cultures when interacting with them during their visit, which means my cultural competence is excellent.Leadership Style Reflective Essay.
Value Assessment; VARK Questionnaire
This questionnaire mainly tests a person’s learning mode. I took this test so that I could understand how best I can teach my fellow nurses concepts and how best to provide leadership to them, considering I would need to lead by example. This assessment revealed that I have a kinesthetic score of 12, which is the highest among the rest of the learning modes. This test revealed that I prefer to learn using concrete examples, and therefore, I enjoy the learning process by doing things practically and trying them out for myself (Bastable, 2017). Therefore, field trips, using case studies, experiments, photographs, and samples are my most effective learning aids.
Leadership Style
The leadership style that closely aligns with my philosophy of care is transformational leadership. A transformational leader works with the team members to identify a necessary change, creates a vision with them, and guides by offering inspiration and applying the change after project completion (Conte, 2019; Blane, 2018). I believe that I work best when consulting with my teammates. I do not particularly appreciate feeling like the top boss whom everyone fears or finds unapproachable. I think that the interaction with the teammates and discussing their ideas where they feel heard and valued is what I like the most about this leadership style. I feel like part of the team and not just their boss. My social nature allows me to interact with my teammates and encourage them each step of the way, without overexerting myself as a leader where they feel the need to avoid me.Leadership Style Reflective Essay.
Exercising Leadership
Within a healthcare organization setting, I could incorporate the inspiration as a leading element of this leadership by inspiring my teammates to achieve the set goals or objectives. For instance, the hospital could be grappling with issues such as patient falls and failing nursing responsibility. After instituting measures such as installing bedside alarms for the patients, I would inspire the nurses by talking to them about their role as nurses, and that they should understand that mistakes happen. Still, they need to mitigate the causal factors for patient falls. Another way to inspire the nurses would be to work alongside them by taking patient cases and utilizing the bedside alarms installed as a solution. By the end of the week, I would call the nurses for a meeting to compare notes on working with patients and responding to the bedside alarms. My value assessment test indicates that I prefer to learn through practical activity. Therefore, to inspire my teammates, I would practically work with them so that they could learn from me.Leadership Style Reflective Essay.
Another leadership approach I would apply using this style would be to demonstrate my cultural competence skills by ensuring that everyone understands the organizational goals, even when it means printing hospital or project guidelines for my teammates in different languages. A transformational leader guides the teammates in achieving the identified goal. Therefore, as their leader, one of the best approaches for me would be to be inclusive with all teammates through cultural competence.Leadership Style Reflective Essay.
Areas of Improvement
The 16 personalities test revealed as an individual with the entertainer personality, one of my greatest weaknesses that could adversely influence my profession as a nurse leader would be that I am highly sensitive. The results reveal that I can be overly emotional, hence, making me vulnerable to criticism as a leader. A highly sensitive individual sometimes tends to overlook logic and only operate using their emotion, which is detrimental to their mental wellbeing and profession (Dyer, 2018). Therefore, with this weakness, teammates may find it difficult to approach me with suggestions such as changing my initial work approach or criticizing me for errors made. To rectify this, I need to develop a more practical mindset gradually. Assessing facts is more important than acting on emotion because emotions are temporary, and facts never change. Therefore, by focusing on facts and logic, I could overcome the sensitivity and manage to take criticism well, so that I can lead my teammates better.Leadership Style Reflective Essay.
