Proficiency Report on Quality of Care
An electronic barcode medication administration (BCMA) system was implemented in the psychiatric unit. The system was designed and implemented to improve the accuracy of medication administration, reduce medication errors, and generate electronic patient medication records.Proficiency Report on Quality of Care. The barcode reader registers every medication, while the software verifies the right medication was ordered, timely administration, and in the correct dose, while documenting the actual administration of the drug (Shah et al., 2016).All nurses in the psychiatry unit were trained about the use of BCMA. I was part of the nursing staff actively involved in the implementation of the software. I championed for the nursing staff to accept the implemented system where I managed to convince the once resistant staff to accept the new system. Additionally, I persuaded the organizational management to provided the required resources for the project. Throughout the implementation process, I would lead the team and coordinate various interdisciplinary members involved in the implementation of the BCMA system.Proficiency Report on Quality of Care.
Baseline data on all administered medications and reported adverse events related to medication that occurred before the implementation of the BCMA system was collected, as well as data after the completion of the system’s implementation.Proficiency Report on Quality of Care. The efficiency of medication administration and the rate of medication errors pre-and-post implementation of the BCMA system was compared (Thompson et al., 2018). After the implementation of the BCMA system in the psychiatric unit, the rate of medication errorssignificantly reduced. Additionally, the staff reported that the system was more efficient regarding the accuracy of medication administration, and the generation of accurate electronic patient medication records. This indicates the successful implementation of the BCMA system (Thompson et al., 2018).Proficiency Report on Quality of Care.
