Critical appraisal of peer-reviewed research marks the third stage of the evidence-based practice (EBP) process in clinical inquiry. Healthcare professionals such as nurses engage in critical appraisal of research to determine whether the evidence provided by the research is valid reliable and applicable to their patient populations. It can be undertaken quickly by using the study under appraisal to answer three critical questions that are collectively representative of a rapid critical appraisal process. The three questions are (i) Are the results valid (do they represent the truth or are they false results)? (ii)Critical Appraisal of Qualitative Research. Are the findings reliable (can they be replicated)? (iii) Are the results applicable in practice to patients (was the study conducted on similar patients, do the benefits outweigh the risks, and is the intervention desirable and acceptable to patients)? The answers to these questions determine whether the evidence in the appraised study will be transferrable to the patient population under the care of the clinician (Melnyk & Fineout-Overholt, 2019). Qualitative research is concerned with human experience and their use assists clinicians to understand context of the human experiences and hence the best approach to offer therapeutic interventions. Its types include phenomenological studies, ethnographic studies, and case studies (Melnyk & Fineout-Overholt, 2019). This paper is about the critical appraisal of a qualitative research study on the risk factors to adolescent suicidal ideation, including a family history of suicidality.Critical Appraisal of Qualitative Research.
Critical Appraisal of the Qualitative Study by Bazrafshan et al. (2016)
Type of Qualitative Research Design, Credibility of the Results, Sampling, Data Accuracy, Plausibility of Results, and Implications of the Research
The type of qualitative research design used to conduct this study was phenomenological design and employed semi-structured interviews. Because of the careful methodology employed, the results of this study are valid and credible. Participants to this study who made up the sample of respondents were chosen purposively in non-probability sampling. The accuracy and completeness of the data was assured and the results are plausible. The implications of the research are stated with regard to suicide prevention and care provision to adolescents (Bazrafshan et al., 2016).Critical Appraisal of Qualitative Research.
Sensitivity to Others’ Needs, Situational Competence, Effect on the Reader, Plausibility/ Believability, Drawing the Reader to the Experience, and Results of the Study
The new insights generated by the research indeed improve sensitivity to others’ needs, and the understanding of suicidality brought about by the research enhances situational competence. The effect on the reader is the realization that risk factors to teenage suicidality are multifactorial in nature, with the family history playing a significant role. The results of the study are plausible and believable and the reader is imaginatively drawn to the experience. The results are that there are three major themes to the risk factors predisposing to suicidal ideation of adolescents: (i) individual aspects like personal emotions and coping mechanisms, (ii) familial factors such as suicidality in a parent, and (iii) social factors such as the influence of media and suicidality in others people (Bazrafshan et al., 2016).Critical Appraisal of Qualitative Research.
Research Approach, Identification of Approach, Data Collection and Analysis, Study Significance, Literature Support, and Potential Contribution
The research approach of using semi-structured interviews indeed fits the study purpose. The researcher identifies the study approach from the purpose of the study. In this case it is the experience of suicidality that informed the choice of a phenomenological approach. The data collection and analysis methods are appropriate and the importance of the study is explicitly evident. The literature indeed supports the need for the study. For instance, the World Health Organization states that suicide is the second leading cause of death among adolescents. The study’s potential contribution is in the prevention of teenage suicide and psychotherapy for those with symptoms (Bazrafshan et al., 2016).Critical Appraisal of Qualitative Research.
Sampling Clarity, Control of Sample Selection, Sample Size and Study Needs, Phenomenon Identification, Clarity of Data Collection, and Data Verification Means
The sampling is clear and guided by study needs since the subjects are adolescents between 12 and 19 years who have attempted suicide. The researcher does not however appear to control the selection of the sample as these are patients who had been admitted to the hospital. The sample composition (adolescents) reflects study needs, but its size is quite small as n=14. The phenomenon is clearly identified as suicidal ideation and the data collection procedures are clear. Sources and means of verifying data do not appear to be explicit but rather implicit (Bazrafshan et al., 2016).Critical Appraisal of Qualitative Research.
Researcher Roles, Data Analysis Procedures, Directions of Sampling, Data Management Processes, Reported Results, and Presentation of Specific Findings
Researcher roles and activities are clearly explained in the methodology and data analysis procedures vividly described. Te analysis guides sampling and processes of managing data are explained. The reported results are the three themes of personal factors, family factors, and social factors. But there are also thirteen sub-themes reported in the study. Specific findings are presented verbatim as quotations (Bazrafshan et al., 2016).Critical Appraisal of Qualitative Research.
Derivation of Data Meanings, the Writing, Applicability of Results, Relevance of Results, Relevance to Patient Circumstances, and How to Apply in Clinical Practice
Data meanings are described in context, the writing promotes understanding, and the results will boost EBP in caring for adolescents with suicidality. The findings are relevant to people in identical situations and patient circumstances. The results may be applied to clinical practice by restructuring prevention strategies for adolescent suicide (Bazrafshan et al., 2016).Critical Appraisal of Qualitative Research.
Conclusion
Qualitative studies are important in research that explores human experiences or phenomena. They provide some of the evidence for change to EBP in nursing practice.Critical Appraisal of Qualitative Research.
