Summary of strengths:
I have developed exemplary skills in epistaxis management/nasal packing, cryotherapy, wart removal, performing a digital block for anesthesia, and IUD placement and removal. Epistaxis is a very common but non-fatal issue that patients present within clinical practice. I can efficiently manage either posterior or anterior bleeding by applying digital pressure; performing a gentle chemical cauterization or nasal packs. FNP Clinical Procedures Self-Assessment Form Essay. I have exemplary cryotherapy skills due to my immense knowledge of the structure and function of the skin, freeze-thaw cycles and their function, and my ability to select a suitable and sizeable size nozzle for a spray gun. I can attribute my confidence in performing a digital block for anesthesia to having a thorough knowledge of regional anatomy. Today, I can perform a nerve block for a wide range of procedures and injuries such as incision and drainage, dislocations, repairs of lacerations, fractures, and removal of fingernails. I strongly believe that my confidence to perform an IUD placement and removal will increase the nursing workforce capacity to deliver IUD insertion services effectively and efficiently and increase access to utilizing IUD services among women of reproductive age.
Growth opportunities:
Develop skills in Corneal Foreign Body Removal- I look forward to perfecting my skills in removing corneal foreign bodies, which according to Camodeca & Anderson (2020), are the most common form of ocular trauma that causes abrasions to the cornea. The foreign bodies can be benign, and superficial but very uncomfortable.
EKG Lead Placement and Interpretation- since nurses are often the first responders to cardiac arrests that happen in the hospital, Tahboub & Yılmaz (2019) emphasize that they need to master basic skills on how to perform resuscitation. I look forward to improving my ability to recognize basic rhythms in an EKG to be able to monitor and make clinical decisions regarding patient care. I particularly look forward to improving my ability to perform a precordial lead placement using the clavicular method and angle of Louis method.
Suturing- Mackay-Wiggan, Ratner & Sambandan (2015) observe that, most patients present in the EDs or primary care settings with wounds that require suturing. I look forward to improving my suturing skills using the synthetic, absorbable, monofilament, non-absorbable, and multifilament sutures and to do a purse-string suture. FNP Clinical Procedures Self-Assessment Form Essay.
Subungual Hematoma Evacuation-although not a common occurrence, some patients present with nail bed injuries that develop bleeding underneath (Pingel & McDowell, 2020). I look forward to improving my physical assessment skills when assessing such a patient for nail discoloration and pain. I hope to improve my skills in performing an evacuation using a needle as well as handheld electrocautery.
Now, write three to four (3–4) possible goals and objectives for this practicum experience. Ensure that they follow the SMART Strategy, as described in the Learning Resources.
By the end of the semester, I want to learn how to remove a foreign corneal body using the simple irrigation with a moist cotton swab, and the ophthalmic corneal burr method.
By the end of the practicum, I look forward to improving my skills in performing a precordial lead placement using the Angle of Louis and Clavicular Methods.
I intend to increase my confidence in doing a purse-string suture by the end of the school year.
I strive to know how to perform a subungual hematoma evacuation using a needle and handheld electrocautery.
