The nursing philosophy best matches my philosophy because I view nursing as an honorable profession and I do not see it as just an occupation to give me a paycheck. My duty is to proudly offer competent and nonjudgmental care to all individuals regardless of their lifestyle choices, spiritual beliefs, ethnicity/ race, sexual orientation, age, level of education, and financial status. I believe that patients and their families must be respected and I am certain that I am capable of providing care without bias. I see nursing as a moral practice, whose purpose is to restore others, but not personal profit or gain. I hold the belief that nursing is not merely a career, but it is a privilege that individuals who are ardent about utilizing their skills and knowledge take upon to assist those who are not able to assist those who need help.Personal Theoretical Framework for Advanced Practice.
A Nursing Theory that Fits the Philosophy including my Personal Philosophy
Jean Watson’s theory of caring is a nursing theory that matches my personal philosophy. The theory acknowledges caring as the greatest type of commitment to others, self, to the environment, and society. According to Friberg (2019), caring, which is viewed by Watson as a moral ideal instead of a task-oriented behavior, is central to the practice of nursing. Watson’s human caring theory aims at shifting nursing away from treatment to focusing on nursing on caring. The core of the caring theory is that people/human beings cannot be viewed or treated as objects and are part of self, nature, workforces, and others. The theory assumes that an individual, that is both the cline and the nurse is nonreducible and is connected with others and nature. The patient’s environment has both internal and external variables and the role of the nurse is to promote a caring environment, the one that permits persons to makes a choice that suits them. The nursing practice is dissimilar from curing. The objective of nursing is to assist individuals achieve a greater degree of harmony by providing a relationship the patient can utilize to grow and develop personally.Personal Theoretical Framework for Advanced Practice.
Watson’s human caring theory fits with my philosophy because I believe that caring includes caring about and caring for my patients, using my skills and knowledge. As such, I can make sure that caring is core to the experience of patients by endorsing human caring theory a guide or basis for nursing practice. Watson’s theory is congruent with my personal nursing philosophy because both embraces caring as the basic practice of nursing. Also, the two embrace nurse’s roles in respecting human dignity as my philosophy necessitate me to care for patients in a compassionate, kind, and empathetic manner without any prejudice. The human caring theory focuses on the patient as a whole rather than on the patient’s illness and plan for treating the illness. In the view of Watson, the disease may be cured, but the patient will remain ill because, in the absence of caring, health cannot be attained. Caring is the core of nursing and signifies receptiveness between the patient and the nurse, with the nurse working alongside the patient. In addition, Watson asserts that caring can assist a person to promote healthy changes, become well-informed, and gain control (Bayuo, 2017).
According to Pajnkihar et al (2017) to be capable of performing a caring action, nurses require artistic and scientific expertise and knowledge. Nursing education plays a crucial role in acquiring and advancing my caring attributes, and I emphasize it all through my professional life. Watson posits that caring essence of nursing whereby the outcome is enhancement, preservation, and protection of human dignity. Respectful and trustful interpersonal relationships are of extreme significance for the preservation of human dignity. Nurses’ caring behaviors can contribute to patients’ well-being and satisfaction of patients and is more than a certain profession or human to human caring. If caring is absent, non-caring outcomes and discontentment with nursing care can occur, and make the individual feel like he or she is an object.Personal Theoretical Framework for Advanced Practice.
A Possible Situation in which the Theory would be a Poor Fit
The human caring theory is an important theory that places caring for individuals as core to nursing. Nevertheless, the theory would be a poor fit in a situation of self-care. The theory fails to feature on how nurses can train patients to self-care to promote their health or prevent illnesses. Although caring is the essence of nursing, it is important for patients to take care of themselves. Because the aim of treatment of illnesses is to increase the performance of the patient, improving patient’s quality of life and assist them to attain a satisfactory quality of life can be achieved by offering self-care programmes along with implementing suitable solutions to assist patients. Watson’s human caring theory does not provide a guide on how nurses can plan and implement good self-care principles.Personal Theoretical Framework for Advanced Practice.
Self-care is learned, objective, and informed behaviors and activities of an individual that are undertaken in real life situations, by an individual or his family members. It aims at regulating the effective growth factors and patient’s performance in relation to the well-being, health, and life. Although one of Watson’s carative factors is engaging in authentic teaching-learning experiences, the theory does not noticeably focus on the promotion of the knowledge of patients to self-care. Self-care behavior or activities is influenced by the knowledge and skills that an individual utilizes for his certain efforts.Personal Theoretical Framework for Advanced Practice.
Self-care is a valuable and significant principle since it highlights the active role of a patient in his or her own healthcare. According to Dinnen-Griffin et al (2019), patient participation entails being involved in care planning and exchanging skills and knowledge, establishing own goals, and undertaking self-care activities. This partnership is valuable in supporting the control and management of symptoms, especially for chronically ill patients. Self-management approaches are highly being acknowledged as a vital component of managing chronic diseases and secondary prevention. When supporting patients to play a role in their care, self-management strategies are the preferences of the individual patient circumstances and prior knowledge.Personal Theoretical Framework for Advanced Practice.
