The Vietnamese people believe in three types of therapy, namely cold, hot therapy, and massage therapy (Hilot). This is typically what Vietnamese individuals do if they cannot manage to pay for services in a healthcare facility. They also believe in medicinal or herbal treatments. The preparation of this medication involves the herbalist making a topical herbal remedy, and one of the substances may be considered unsafe with one of the patient’s medicines. Patients use the herbal remedy in conjunction with medicines they take hence there is a possibility of the medications not getting absorbed (Nguyen, et al., 2016). One of the effects of these health beliefs is that individuals might feel that they no longer require their prescribed drugs and they feel that the herbalist and his therapies are healing them when it could be a placebo or a prescribed drug that is curing them. Culture Factors and Their Influence on Medication Essay. Furthermore, if an individual continues to take prescribed medicine as they wish since they believe the herbalist is healing them, it might result in severe illnesses, particularly those that require life-long care. This health belief may cause some adverse reactions that include enhancement or reduction of the impacts of the medications brought by herbal remedies that may result in problems like Stevens-Johnson syndrome or anaphylaxis (Tran et al., 2017). This may lead to loss of lives, more so if there is no known remedy.
Non – compliance with the medication schedule is common, particularly in older persons. This has to do with polypharmacy or uncertainty on the part of different physicians and medications they provide. The placebo effect is also a concern associated with herbal remedies’ health beliefs. This can be solved by seeing a physician or by conducting their investigation.
