A Study by Glodstein et al. (2018) on the Attitudes of Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (APRNs) on Teenage and Young Adult Suicidality

This study by Glodstein et al. (2018) on APRN attitudes toward adolescent and young adult suicidality is relevant to the specialty of psychiatric-mental health nurse practitioners or PMHNPs as mental health clinicians (Bazrafshan et al., 2016; Hammerton et al., 2016).

Aim of the Study

            The study aim or purpose was to assess the attitudes of psychiatric and pediatric APRNs on the matter of suicidality among young people aged between 15 and 24 years. Among the research questions to be answered was whether a difference exists between the attitudes of psychiatric APRNs and pediatric APRNs toward suicidality as determined by the Suicide Opinion Questionnaire (SOQ) instrument.

Methodology

This was a quantitative study using descriptive correlational design and a non-random convenience sample of APRNs from the psychiatric and pediatric specialties. The respondents were recruited via the two professional nursing organizations namely the National Association of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners (NAPNAP) and the American Psychiatric Nurses Association (APNA). The SOQ was used as the survey tool.

Theoretical Framework

The study was based on the theory that states that people make rational decisions according to the information they have. This theory is the Theory of Reasoned Action (TRA).

Data Analysis

Descriptive statistics of parameters such as age, years of practice, and specialty were recorded. Measures of central tendency such as means were also calculated as were standard deviations and percentages. Internal consistency for reliability was measured using the Cronbach’s alpha. Findings and Limitations

The study findings showed that APRNs in the pediatric specialty have a much more positive attitude toward suicidality in the studied group compared to PMHNPs. Limitations of the study included there was no gender balance in the sample and almost 90% of the sample was Caucasian.

Effectiveness of the Measurements Chosen

According to the purpose of the study, the research questions, and the study methodology; the measurements chosen by the researchers were adequate and effective. Using the Suicide Opinion Questionnaire (SOQ) was appropriate since opinion on suicidality is what was being measured (Bazrafshan et al., 2016; Hammerton et al., 2016).
