Personal Leadership Philosophy

Introduction

Leadership is a critical concept in all organizations. Effective leadership follows various philosophies, with one of the most noteworthy being transformational leadership. Exploring leadership, especially in nursing, is important for delivering quality healthcare services to patients, and developing a robust team of nurses. This paper explores the characteristics of a transformational leader, the most important values of a nursing leader, my expectations of a team, and my strengths and weaknesses, as well as how to strengthen these weaknesses as a leader.

Characteristics of a Transformational Leader

Transformational leadership is a theory that describes a leader who leads a team and collaboratively works with the team to identify the required changes and targets, helps the team develop a vision to achieve the desired target, inspires the team to work through their tasks, and shares with them the achievement. A transformational leader is, therefore, a leader who practices this leadership theory when guiding his or her team (Conte & Landy, 2019). Such leaders tend to have an idealized form in influence on their team members, can intellectually stimulate the team members, can inspire, and motivate them, and are highly considerate of their team members situations. To effectively practice this leadership theory, the following is a list of five of the most important leadership traits that a transformational leader should possess:Leadership & Nursing Care Management

  • Humility- a transformational leader must check their ego and pride when handling their teams. When in a position of power, it is easy for the leader to allow their ego to dominate them. However, to inspire and motivate the team members, a transformational leader must check and control their ego, put aside their personal needs, and focus on the group.
  • Inspirational- a leader practising this leadership theory should be able to inspire and motivate the rest of the team (Thompson & Miller, 2017). This characteristic requires an individual who is naturally patient and develops perspective to allow them to offer inspirational insights to others.
  • The leader should be adaptable and malleable in implementing new ideas. The transformational leader works with the team members. Therefore, as they suggest new ideas, which would help achieve the vision, the leader should enhance the team’s efforts by being adaptable to new ideas.
  • The leader should be proactive and take risks because they guide the team towards a vision that they set.
  • The leader should be proper time management and focused. The leader must manage themselves well, to lead the rest of the team members. Internal motivation is, therefore, critical for such a leader so that they can manage others.

Values a Nursing Leader Should Possess

Leadership in nursing is critical for patient health promotion and professional development because it ensures that nurses provide patients with quality healthcare and that the nurse performs his or her roles following the nursing practice standards of care provided by the American Nursing Association. Therefore, the nurse leader should be capable and competent for a leadership position within the nursing discourse. The following are some of the values that I strongly believe that the nursing leader should possess for them to perform their roles effectively:

  • Integrity- nursing leaders should possess integrity, where they are honest and ethical in their roles. A nurse should be ethical when treating patients and guiding the rest of the nursing team (Hafsteinsdóttir et al., 2019). For instance, when there are errors in a hospital concerning nurses, the nursing leader should ensure that the errors are accounted for, to uphold the profession’s integrity. When the leader makes mistakes, he or she should be willing to admit these mistakes and remain transparent.
  • Accountability- this trait is closely linked to integrity because the nurse leader should be accountable for any activities they undertake and every nurse under their team. Integrity and transparency as a nursing leader enable accountability (Hafsteinsdóttir et al., 2019).
  • The nursing leader should be empathetic and demonstrate high levels of human dignity. This means that as a leader, the nurse should understand and respect the worth of human life and therefore, demonstrate empathy and respect when interacting with their team members (Huber, 2018). These traits ultimately lead to the provision of quality healthcare services because of the high value the leader places on human lives.
  • Advocacy- the nursing leader should practice advocacy and social justice, and try their level best to eliminate non-discriminatory practices in the nursing team, and supporting fairness and social justice for patients and the nursing team.
  • Cultural competence and altruism- the nurse leader should be culturally competent to lead the nursing team considering the increasingly multi-cultural society in the United States (Huber, 2018). The nurse leader should treat everyone with dignity and equality without expecting any form of recognition.Leadership & Nursing Care Management

Acceptable Behaviors

As a leader, I expect that my team have the following acceptable behaviors:

  • Cooperation- I expect all my team members to be highly cooperative and collaborative so that the team can accomplish the mission and vision of the organization. I believe that a cooperative team tends to be successful compared to teams with less cooperative individuals.
  • Integrity- I expect my team members to possess integrity and accountability for their actions. Integrity propels the team forward because the team members strive to do the right thing. Therefore, I expect integrity as one of the bare minimum acceptable behavior from my team.
  • Proper time management- I strongly believe that people who manage their time properly are highly successful. Therefore, I expect that my team members manage their time properly and get tasks completed within deadlines.
  • Adaptability- I expect adaptability from the team members because sometimes missions and visions change. Therefore, I want to work with a malleable team that quickly adjusts to new situations presented to them. Such a team would be highly successful because their adaptability means that they can handle any challenges that arise, without compromising on the strength of the team, and its ability to perform the tasks required.

  • Sociability- I want to work with a team of sociable individuals who create a conducive working environment. Sociability is critical for a team because it eliminates the tensions that may arise from personality differences from the team members (Gokenbach, 2018). I expect the team to be accommodative of each other and establish cohesive bonds that create a perfect working environment.

Strengths and Weaknesses

From these characteristics, values and expectations, I identify some of my strengths and weaknesses. I am generally a CD style leader within the DiSC leadership model. This model provides a comprehensive construction of the interpersonal aspects within the leadership discourse (Sugerman, 2011). These reference points include dominance, influence, steadiness, and conscientiousness. As a CD style leader, this means that I am strong-willed, forceful, direct, analytical, logical, and private (Simpson, 2019). As a leader, I am task-oriented; therefore, I have limited tolerance for errors and unauthorized changes. I prefer the centralized leadership structure, and I expect compliance and cooperation from my teammates. I can also be formal, and I rely on detailed information before making decisions. Based on this description of my leadership traits, the following is a discussion of my strengths and weaknesses.

Strengths

  • Disciplined- I am highly disciplined and tend to focus on tasks until I accomplish them
  • I set high standards for my team and myself. Therefore, I, deliver quality results in any task I set out to perform.
  • I am objective, which makes me a reliable and competent decision-maker in any given situation.
  • I am determined, which means I eliminate any barrier to progress whenever I embark on any project.
  • I believe I am a critical thinker, which provides me with the opportunity to develop insights and perspectives about different matters. This trait enables me to make solid and right decisions based on facts and analysis from different perspectives.Leadership & Nursing Care Management

Weaknesses

  • I tend to be highly sceptical and cynical of concepts and things. As such, this trait prevents me from making decisions fast, and sometimes I miss lucrative opportunities because I treat situations suspiciously.
  • I am impatient, which is a weakness because I believe that if I developed patience, I would improve my performance at work and my relationship with my teammates. In situations where a teammate makes a mistake, I tend to be quick to decide their fate because I interpret as non-compliance. Patience in leadership is critical because it allows the leader to make proper decisions and effectively inspire motivation and compliance from the teammates (Osborne, 2016).
  • Sometimes I am stubborn, which makes it difficult to work with me. This stubbornness limits my adaptability to change, which is paradoxical because I expect my team members to be adaptable to changing situations.
  • I fear failure, which weakness me as an individual and as a professional. Head (2019) contends that fear is crippling and limits one from taking risks. Effective leaders are risk-takers (Sundheim, 2013). Therefore, sometimes I fear embarking on a project because I fear that I will fail and I am unable to fathom my teammates perceiving me as a failure, especially as their leader. I need to strengthen this weakness before it completely incapacitates me as a leader.

Action Plan to Strengthen Top Weaknesses

I recognize the need to strengthen my weaknesses to enhance my profession and my relationships with my teammates and other people with whom I interact. Therefore, the following is an action plan to strengthen the weaknesses I believe are the most critical:

  • Practice risk-taking for smaller decisions and gradually take risks for bigger projects. I must overcome my fear for failure because the fear is crippling and incapacitate my professional abilities and potential. Therefore, I will start taking smaller risks and graduate to bigger risks as I move along.
  • Develop an open mindset that reduces my stubbornness. As a CD leader, I tend to be authoritarian and rigid. I prefer things done my way. This mentality is toxic to teamwork. Therefore, I need to ensure that I am adaptable to change, and less stubborn so that I listen to my teammates. It is unfair for me to expect compliance from, while I remain rigid in thought and decisions.
  • I must develop patience as a leader because it will help me accommodate other people and their ideas and innovations, without feeling undermined or experiencing the need to stamp my authority in situations where it is unnecessary. Leadership & Nursing Care Management

Conclusion

Transformational leadership is essential in any organization, where the leader should inspire, motivate, collaborate with, and possess characteristics such as humility, inspiration, and being proactive, among others. Nursing leadership is another aspect of leadership that is critical within a healthcare setting. Nursing leaders should be accountable, adaptable, have integrity, and be empathetic towards others. As a leader, I expect my teammates to have these traits mentioned. However, I realized I have major weaknesses, such as being stubborn, impatient, skeptical, and fearing failure. I need to take more risks, be more open-minded and listen to my teammates, and be adaptable to strengthen my weaknesses.
