Effective and Caring Nurse-Patient Relationships
An incredible relationship is a memorable experience that exemplifies what a relationship is all about. As a nurse, my professional life has been suffused with many incredible experiences with other nurses, medical personnel, patients and family members. The most incredible relationships have often involved patients whereby I leverage the therapeutic patient-nurse relationship to develop trust from a position of a profession in which the patients trust me to act in their best interests while accepting their input and perspectives in terms of opinions on health care directions and options. Over the course of my professional experiences in handling patients, I have learned that incredible patient-nurse relationships are built upon the concepts of mutual respect and trust in which the nurse trusts the patient to be honest and the patient trusts the nurse to provide the best possible care. In addition, there is a need to nurture hope and faith in which the nurse adopts a positivist approach that allows the patient to be optimistic about the adopted care approaches (Conroy et al., 2017). Besides that, the relationship should be sensitive to the needs of all parties, clearly explaining all ideas and ensuring that no decisions violate the principles of the parties in the relationship. For instance, Muslim patients have different principles from Christian and atheist patients and there is a need to understand each patient’s cultural and religious principles so as to avoid misunderstandings that could strain the relationship. Also, there is a need to apply professional skills and knowledge to gratify the spiritual, emotional and physical needs of the patient. Overall, an incredible relationship between nurses and patients is characterized by nonverbal and verbal communication elements that are applied in presenting interactions that allows for a caring relationship that results in healing and harmony, while enabling all parties to be equal partners in achieving wellness (Feo et al., 2017).
