Strategies for Success

Before beginning this online journey, I did not know if it was right for me. When it comes down to it, I did not know what to expect, until I attended University of Maryland Global Campus to get my BSN. What I did know is that in order to advance in my career path, I needed to further my education.

For months my family and friends listened to my indecisiveness about starting a nurse practitioner program. As a unit, we had to discuss our readiness—personally and financially (Online College, n.d.). Not only does returning to school affect my family’s schedule, but it also affects my availability to friends and employers. To be successful as a wife, friend, and colleague, I must analyze resources and formulate strategies for effective online learning. NURS-6003N week 2 discussion

Technology Use and Time Management

“Online learning can lead to negative emotions including frustration (Berenson, Boyles, and Weaver 2008), especially if courses are poorly designed and or students do not exhibit the skills needed to learn online” (Kauffman, 2015). Walden’s online courses are thoroughly thought out; however, for someone new to this space, I found my first week overwhelming. Getting used to navigating the online space and formatting discussions took a lot of time, then add family and Thanksgiving on top of that, I thought I was going to need to withdraw. To support myself, I created a Bookmarks Folder and began gathering links to help me in the weeks to come. I found the following link to Course Guides  https://academicguides.waldenu.edu/c.php?g=132474&p=866429

NUR 6003: Transition to Graduate Study for Nursing does not have a Course Guide, but for the courses that have guides and readings available, we can use it to copy and paste the references for quick citing. I am all about discovering time-saving techniques that do not cut quality.

  • What time-saving techniques have you discovered?
  • Do you have any time management hacks you’d like to share?
  • How do you make time for the required online readings?

Navigating the Network

Sharing questions is a wonderful way to connect and learn; therefore, I need to be comfortable asking questions. I was so nervous and overwhelmed last week that I thought I was alone. Now that I see many of you have the same questions, I feel brave! NURS-6003N week 2 discussion

Jillian Richardson explains that being brave in your space is a part of community building. She states, “The next time you attend an event, look around. Then ask yourself:

How many people in this space are like me? And in what ways?” (p. 127). In our case, we are attending an online event. We are taking a look around and learning about ourselves and each other.

Discussion: Strategies for Addressing Questions

In Module 1, you began building a foundation for your success by considering a network-individuals and teams who can help you to clarify and execute on the vision. A network is most helpful when you are comfortable asking questions. Chances are other members of your network have experienced similar questions and may have helped guide others toward resolutions that can now be helpful.

In this Discussion, focus on the questions you are ready to ask as your journey begins. Keep in mind that sharing questions is often a great way to help others who have similar questions even if they do not realize it! NURS-6003N week 2 discussion

To prepare:

  • Reflect on questions or concerns you might have as you begin the MSN program.
  • Consider the individuals, teams, and departments you previously considered in Module 1 as well as how they may provide support with addressing these questions and concerns.

By Day 3 of Week 2

Post any questions or concerns that you are willing to share with the group. The Discussion board represents an opportunity to network with your course colleagues, and others may have the same questions or concerns.

By Day 6 of Week 2

Respond to at least two of your colleagues’ posts by offering a possible resolution to their questions/concerns with supporting documentation, if possible, or expanding on their thinking and providing an example as support. NURS-6003N week 2 discussion

When I was a little girl, I knew I wanted to become a nurse.  Getting into nursing school, I was more nervous about what kind of nurse I wanted to be.  While I felt everyone else in the class was more focused on grades.  I knew I wanted to be a caring person to all my patients.  On the first day of nursing class, my teacher quoted Jean Watson.  Caring is the essence of nursing.  That statement resided in me like no other statement before. I wanted to be the nurse who would care and be attentive.

Transitioning into Advance Practice

Walden University has provided me easy transitioning into my advanced practice by accommodating me with an online FNP program.  “Online education offers a convenience and flexibility that traditional face-to-face classes cannot, especially important for those learners balancing work, school, and family” (Kauffman, 2015).  One of the main reasons why it took me so long to apply to an FNP program is I question myself what kind of FNP would I be.   According to Letizia (2014) “An important factor that may impact a medical-surgical nurse’s decision to pursue an APRN educational program includes the outcomes demonstrated by these health care providers” (p. 212).  Seeing most of them lose their caring factor affects me.  Honestly, that is what drives me as a nurse is that I care about my patients.  Becoming an FNP, I would like to keep that same factor.  So I question myself now since this is a new beginning of my journey.  How do I keep the caring factor?  I do not want to lose that caring factor, but I want to make tactful changes using my advanced practice in nursing.  This question does fester within me because I have yet found a real answer.  Yes, the unknown can be scary, although we can not let it hinder us in growing.  Transitioning into this position creates many changes and allows me to sell myself better by networking. Networking Matters

According to Online College, “The process of completing a degree or certificate program in higher education is filled with benefits and challenges” (para., 12).  Becoming an FNP opens up many opportunities to network yourself on a higher level of the educational plane.  Many different types of networking resources we could use.  “Professional networks are crucially connected to quality patient care” (Letizia, 2014, p. 212).  To obtain the highest quality of care, you need an outside resource to assist you at times.  You are going to consult a doctor you trust or a professional resource someone referred you to.  Consulting others is networking at its finest.  Since my main focus is applying my WOC certification with my NP, I need to network to acquire this type of trust.
