I am sure most of us in this class have worked for more than one employer in our careers. This also means that we have been under the management of different leaders because not all leader has the same qualities and personality types. Having different qualities and personalty types does not mean they are weak leaders, it just means some lead their unit or organization a little better. (Broome & Marshall, 2021) state “it is critical to have strong leaders in the field of medicine” and I could not agree more! For me, a strong leader is someone who is not afraid to do the right thing when no one is watching, dependable, and able to provide education when it is needed. All of these characteristics are very important in the healthcare system because of how quickly evidence-based practices change the way we perform task, give medications and much more. The first article I selected is a study focused solely on emergency room nurses in Australia. Research, provided in this article, concluded there were 300 emergency room nursing positions open and the authors wanted further investigation as to why there were so many more positions available in this unit as opposed to others. (Gorman, 2019) discovered “by gathering understanding of the elements that influence staff retention, we will be able to lay down a strong foundation for the future of emergency nursing.” I feel that is this a huge insight and take away from this research because without understanding the factors impacting the nursing shortage, how can they be fixed? Also, the study found “leadership within the emergency department has a strong correlation to staff retention” (Gorman, 2019). This statement alone is the biggest reason I left my staff job. The management was so hard to work for, never listening to their employers recommendations and also about how many patients we could turn to bring the hospital in money. This is a prime example of the leadership one does not want to work for and why 5/10 of my track members left within a 30-day period. On any given shift, we would see employees being talked down to, not educated long enough (pertaining mostly to contract workers) and turning new graduate nurses on the floor when they were not ready. I am sure the patients could tell and this is something we should not accept as a “normal.”
Another article I found rather interesting was conducted by Delaware Public Health. This research focused on the education being a contributing factor to the nursing shortage and why there are so many nurses retiring but limited amount of nursing entering the field of study. “Nurses need to be taught by nurses” (The 2021 american nursing shortage, 2022). Future Emergency Nursing Workforce Essay In the article, the authors outline a “Critical Care Nurse Residency Structured Competency Plan” that correlates nursing competencies with with curriculum and methods to evaluate the learning. As we know there are more nurses reaching the retirement age than nurses entering the field of medicine. This is taken into consideration in the article and ways to ensure we are adequately training the individuals entering the healthcare setting. “Utilizing an accredited framework to create nurse residency programs demonstrates organizational impact and value by ensuring evidence-based structures and plans are incorporated to accomplish patient safety and other organizational goals” (Sutor & Painter, 2020). I found this very beneficial, especially as a new graduate registered nurse (RN) entering the medical field during the COVID-19 pandemic and missing most of my last semester of nursing school. It is hard enough adjusting to the chaos and unknown of the emergency room (ER), but having the 16-week residency program helped tremendously with adjustment. Having this skill of completion was one of the biggest positive outcomes of my staff career. Future Emergency Nursing Workforce Essay My old organization did a very good job and trying to educate the new graduates and allow them to have the opportunity to see as much as they could during the residency program. Comparing nurses who completed the residency program to contract nurses who only received one shift of orientation, I firmly believe the contract workers would have benefited from more training prior to being on their own. I believe the mandatory residency program positively impacted the workplace because everyone was taught according to the same curriculum so the seasoned nurses knew what they new graduates had learned and already seen/accomplished. On the other hand, the seasoned nurses knew when the new graduates were ready to go into traumas and codes and actually know how they worked, what to expect and how to accomplish tasks in an emergent manner. It helped the department run smoother and incorporated more team work. Also, it gave the same seasoned nurses a break from having to be directly involved in all of the codes, traumas, sedations, etc. Future Emergency Nursing Workforce Essay
In the short time that I have been a nurse, I have directly been under three different leaders. All three of these leaders ran their department very differently. They all had different traits, quirks, and expected different outcomes. The leader I am currently working under is by far the best one yet. She will dress business casual almost every time she comes into the hospital Monday-Friday, but you can count on her being on that unit and asking where she can help when something traumatic comes in or even when we are short staffed. She is proactive and ready to take an assignment or help wherever is needed. Her knowledge and ability to educate is outstanding and definitely a trait that I feel is important, especially being a new nurse and still learning. I have never heard this individual talk down to one of her employees but instead listens. She listens to concerns and frequently asks “what can be changed or what is not working on the unit?” The is the kind of leadership any unit needs to thrive and help conquer the nursing shortage Future Emergency Nursing Workforce Essay
