Change is inevitable, especially in healthcare. With so many advances in healthcare and so many ideas and increased research to find ways to improve patient care, it is expected. Lewin’s Change Theory is essential to implementing change and transitioning people into the necessary changes anticipated in healthcare. Joanna B. (2019, April 21) emphasized those going through the change must ultimately feel survival safety. Lewin’s Change theory was developed to guide participants towards comfort and safety in change throughout the change process. Sipes (2020) reminds us it is a framework for managing change. I saw the use of Lewin’s Change Theory many times while working in a hospital setting, especially when transitioning to a new charting system. The notion of unfreezing, change and refreezing were apparent and essential. Behavioral Change Models Essay

Another theory relative to change is the Chaos Theory. Throughout my facility’s EHR changes, this theory felt familiar. Sipes (2020) notes with this a small change can result in a significant effect later. At the start of the change, baby steps were committed to, and they had significant effects later. There were also changes along the way as a result of unexpected outcomes. Behavioral Change Models Essay

Rogers Diffusion of Innovations Theory is another theoretical concept that could apply to how change is implemented and how rapidly. LaMonte (2019) notes this theory is one of the oldest social science theories. It originated to explain how, over time, an idea or product gains momentum and diffuses through a specific population or social innovation, new idea, behavior or product is adopted. Awareness of the need for an innovation is an important start to this process. Through the following five stages, relative advantage, compatibility, complexity, triability and observability, Diffusions Theory is implemented. These stages essentially process what is thought about the innovation, how it impacts the users, how difficult it may be to understand, testing it and the observation of the results. Behavioral Change Models Essay It is important to incorporate these theories to help guide us through the changes to come, and help us be successful working towards the goal of better patient outcomes.
