Sexuality Education as a Moral Good Assignment
Christian Engagement
There have been many debates on the interrelated issues of gender, LGBTQ+, and race dynamics, and the church has for a long time been in the middle of it. According to Levand and Ross (2021), this issue cannot be ignored, and it is upon the church to openly state their position and offer guidance to their followership. A recommended wise and ethical way forward for Christian engagement on these issues requires a careful approach considering aspects such as compassion, biblical values, and social justice. First, Christians are called upon to recognize every individual’s inherent dignity and worth. Clarke et al. (2022) state that this dignity should be accorded to all individuals regardless of gender identity, sexual orientation, or racial background. This position is informed by the biblical teaching that all humans are created in God’s image, necessitating that all be treated with love, respect, and empathy. Another required ethical approach from a Christian perspective, as proposed by Clarke et al. (2022), is engaging in deep theological reflection regarding these three issues. Levand and Ross (2021) added that this would involve consulting biblical passages in their historical and cultural context. The value of doing this enables individuals to better understand the broader themes of justice, mercy, and reconciliation. It must, however, be mentioned that different Christians have different understandings and interpretations. Given this, it is advised that they stay committed to seeking understanding and common ground, even if it requires prayers and consultations with Christian leaders. Gender, LGBTQ+, and race dynamics have occupied similar spaces of advocacy in the current climate, leading many evangelicals to dismiss their concerns with a single waiving of the hand. Consider how these issues might reflect the need for different approaches in engagement. Consider, too, how they might actually reflect overlapping concerns. After careful consideration of the complex intersections at play, answer the following DQ:
