Leadership theories in practice
Nurse leadership has become an interesting topic of study given the role of nurse leaders in driving organizational success by fostering a healthy workplace environment. With the increasingly evolving nursing specialty, nurse leaders have been tasked with facilitating knowledge translation and promoting evidence-based practice across various healthcare settings. The aim of this paper is to explore the impact of leadership behaviors on creating healthy work environments by examining scholarly resources that pertain leadership theories and practices. The insights gained from these resources as well as real-world examples of leadership behaviors in practice, this paper will identify the role of transformational leadership in promoting collaboration, innovation and patient-centered care. Also, the exploration of the challenges facing nursing practice will help identify strategies that can contribute to a supportive work environment in healthcare.Top of Form Leadership Theories in Practice Assignment
Key insights from scholarly resources
One insight from the first article by Chan et al., (2023) is that transformational leadership is essential in facilitating knowledge translation across healthcare settings. Transformational leaders inspire and motivate their teams to focus on teamwork as opposed to individual interests which helps to foster a shared vision and purpose-driven leadership. An example of this behavior can be attributed to a nurse leader who actively engages their team in understanding the importance of evidence-based practice and knowledge translation, encouraging collaboration and innovation in implementing new practices. Such leaders often create an environment where staff feel empowered to contribute ideas and are motivated to embrace change for the betterment of patient care. For instance, patient falls is a major challenge that is associated with negative patient outcomes such as increased length of hospital stay as well as increased cost of healthcare. A competent nurse leader will emphasize the need to identify at high fall risk patients and implement strategies to prevent patient falls (Heng et al., 2020). In addition, another insight is that effective leadership is influenced by appropriate partnership with stakeholders. In another article, “Leadership in Cancer Care” the article emphasize that effective leadership in oncology nursing involves partnering with stakeholders such as patients and their families. Leaders who involve patients in the decision-making processes and care planning demonstrate a commitment to patient-centered care. For example, a nurse leader who collaborates with cancer survivors to identify gaps in survivorship care and advocates for necessary improvements can significantly impact the quality of care provided. Through the incorporation of patient perspectives, such leaders foster a culture of inclusivity and responsiveness which helps improve the patient experiences and overall workplace performance. Leadership Behaviors in Practice
In my experience, I’ve observed a nurse leader who applies transformational leadership qualities to promote evidence-based practice and knowledge translation. The leader regularly organized staff education sessions on the latest research findings and also encouraged frontline staff to critically evaluate their practice and adhere to new evidence. In addition, she actively sought input from nurses and other healthcare professionals which created a forum for discussion and collaboration. As a result, staff members were contented because they felt valued and motivated to incorporate evidence-based interventions into their daily practice. This approach helps to improve patient outcomes and also foster a culture of continuous learning and professional growth within the workplace. Leadership Theories in Practice Assignment
