Working with Allied Health Professionals Essay
This work is a reflective part predicated on my connection with working in just a multi-professional group environment. I will be using the model by Gibbs model (1988) to aid my representation and present my consideration. Although I will be contemplating the way the group performed all together, ultimately I try to guide my own learning, thus assisting my preparation for future similar situations.
Once strategically put in a inter-professional band of students, we were asked to are a team to develop an IPL strategy for the pre-registration training of Allied MEDICAL RESEARCHERS. Our efforts were to be centred on setting up a twenty minute demonstration based on our idea to your AHP peers. This was carried out over a week, with our demonstration was likely to be given on Friday day. Working with Allied Health Professionals Essay
We first set up and became familiar with one another on Monday day. First introductions and group communication were aided by a straightforward but effective exercise to assist preliminary group cooperation. This activity was fun, and valuable in assisting us begin to establish the group romance, and individually extinguished any uneasy feelings that i may usually have in a situation such as this. I also experienced confident that particular band of individuals functioned well together and at this point I had no concerns about the task ahead.
Subsequently, we received our main job. Although I believed that there have been some very valid and brilliant thoughts brought forward during our brainstorming, I started to worry that there have been perhaps way too many which differed slightly, and that as a group we weren’t using our time effectively. Furthermore, people could not agree on the easiest practicalities, which I felt was unhelpful.
The group met again on Thursday morning, with every individual bringing their contribution of research to share. We reviewed a possible structure to the demonstration, although as the conference went on it became clear that there have been unquestionably some conflicting views on what our methodology should be. At this time, I started out to feel doubtful that the group was capable of decision-making, and began to feel restless about our project. In addition, I noticed that one particular member of the group appeared to feel highly about their own prospect on the duty, and this perhaps they were just a little negative regarding other ideas, unhelpful for the entire morale of the group. The pursuing day we fulfilled in a skills lab for taking some images for our display, that was successful. This was followed by a short discussion, where a few of the associates of the group voiced their concerns that they had lost track of the way the group would present. It was then disclosed that one particular idea have been developed outside of the meetings which there was you don’t need to be concerned, which made me feel excluded from the decision-making. As a result, I resolved to prevent my thoughts becoming too negative by concentrating on my particular research and display role, accepting your choice made.
On the day of the presentation, we met up beforehand and rehearsed using our amalgamated slides. I used to be pleasantly surprised about how exactly the whole thing flowed, and sensed relieved. The group as a whole also looked like reassured. Working with Allied Health Professionals Essay
Individual Performance
I think that I tried my upmost showing dedication to the group and its own task, also to give support when necessary. That is reflected in the peer evaluations which i received after the job was over. At the same time, I also attempted to keep the group targeted and remind them of your energy constraints.
Nonetheless, I have come to realise that I was restless and distrustful that the group would not have the ability to finish the work that were set. Due to my unease of the group’s relatively gradual progression, I think that I subliminally withdrew from the group in that I used to be only confident in my own individual component of the task, deciding to avoid being concerned with the overall work. Among the manners of conflict determined by John Hunt (1987) is unhelpful ‘trip’ behaviour (internal, physical or symbolic drawback), which blocks and inhibits group work. In my own opinion this identifies the negative way in which I acted, which on reflection was likely detrimental to group efficiency.
Group Performance
I think our last presentation artefact was successful, shown by the unexpectedly positive feedback which we received. I came across this surprising, due to amount of discord and insufficient decision-making that went on during the process. Charles Handy (1993) is of the judgment that although organizations collaboratively produce fewer ideas than specific brainstorming, the grade of the ideas is superior in that they may be more thought through and better examined. Even though our proposal is not what I’d have eliminated for individually, I’ve come to realise that collaborative ideas are of reasonable quality and should not be distrusted. Despite our issue, I realise that with regards to ethical concerns most of us were extremely understanding of certain members’ specific needs. For instance, cases where it was necessary to consider child good care issues whilst deciding conference times were all considered, with everyone being very considerate and accepting. I appreciate that acting fairly and in a reasonable way to each other is critical, as arranged by the to begin the four ethical principles used by Beauchamp and Childress (1995): Admiration for autonomy.
However, in my opinion it is important to discover that group efficiency seemed to breakdown as the week went on. Aspects adding to this included conflicting ideas, poor decision-making and lack of time for healthy group development. I tightly believe the latter was especially harmful to our group communication. The group’s decision-making was so meagre that each users of the group acquired no choice but to take effort and make decisions without the entire group’s agreement. Although I felt that represented group decision-making inability, in hindsight it probably saved us from ultimate failing of the duty. Working with Allied Health Professionals Essay
Within this section are a few key elements that I consider to be important areas of this experience to learn from:
Team-working
In my opinion, there were some very good aspects in your team-working, considering our ultimate success. Spears (1992) details the techniques model, which uses an acronym because of its seven concepts. I’ve thought about this in relation to my group experience, and feel that the team worked well well in undertaking specific research, then approaching together to teach the other person to provide the necessary sustenance to create the presentation. In addition, I think the team developed exciting although challenging ideas that needed the theme a creative step further, whenever a more demure methodology could have been acceptable. Hence in my opinion, we achieved the Desire aspect of the model, making the effort to be imaginative.
However, I believe far better team-working would have been possible if we’d arranged clear goals to be satisfied in our meetings, which could have avoided anxiousness and misunderstanding. In addition, I do think we’d have benefitted from some exterior feedback to improve our working and reduce conflicts. Furthermore, although some creative ideas were submit, some were however met by some negative attitude – damaging to the impressive environment. Working with Allied Health Professionals Essay
On representation, I feel that our group would have absolutely benefitted by planning our work using the METHODS model. In particular, I will definitely strongly suggest my future groupings to use goal-setting to encourage improvement, to gain feedback throughout and to optimise team success by motivating innovation alternatively than cynicism.
Decision-making
I feel that the group’s decision-making was poor credited to a mixture of the large number of ideas, avoidance of discord, and lack of planning and organisation. Although in my own opinion a lot of ideas can only just be positive, conferences lacking composition and orientation meant that this large amount of suggestions made things challenging, hence positive decisions were impossible to accomplish.
As noticed by C. Helpful (1999 p. 173), the decision-making procedure could be by specialist, majority, consensus, minority or no response. During our group work, the only decisions made were negative, with a minority or no response process. I feel that it is because we didn’t decide upon an appointed decision-making method during the early stages of group development. Working with Allied Health Professionals Essay
In my opinion, the role which i played within my group experience afflicted the decision-making negatively, in that I used to be so concerned the task wouldn’t normally be completed, I prevented conflict and went combined with the strongest tone in the group. Looking back again, my thinking was to try to aid progression, when i thought that further discord would slow things down further. Functions by Hall (1971) includes advice for good decision-making, including the advice that group participants should avoid changing their imagination just to avoid conflict, and to actively look for differences of opinion. This is something I am going to take with me and use in future situations.
From this representation, I have learnt that in front planning is key. For instance, an authoritative head should be appointed right from the start, as should a way of decision-making. In addition, conferences should be prepared and well set up, with goals establish to be attained by the end of every one.
Diversity and Difference
Current theory by Cox (1993) suggests that although variety in communities often leads to disagreements, it also means more productivity than with a group which is more homogenous, including an increased level of imagination and innovation. In my own group experience, there was some particular heterogeneity within group associates’ characteristics, including different personalities, behaviour, and subsequently influence and group integration. I think that this was the cause of the issue that took place, although as I’ve already mentioned, the group did collaboratively create a huge selection of ideas and essentially was successful in its end goal. I believe that although conflict could have been absent possessed there been less diversity, so would have the number and quality of imaginative ideas. Working with Allied Health Professionals Essay
To reflect upon my group role, I am going to use Holm and Stevenson’s quick questions (1994):
What was my role in this situation and was I comfortable?
Belbin (1981) noted that if any of the eight team roles is absent or inadequate, the overall team will be off-balance. Ahead of getting together with my group, I carried out a Belbin’s Team Tasks Questionnaire, finding that typically I am an Implementer and Teamworker. In retrospect, whilst I got part of the particular group, I assume that I took on the different role. Although I continued to be an Implementer, in my own opinion I acted more as a Completer-finisher when compared to a Teamworker, considering my anxiousness that the group was inefficient and this the task may well not get done promptly. I really believe my role transformed to facilitate the group’s progression and even out an imbalance. This change did cause me to feel just a bit uncomfortable, due mainly to the unease associated with it.
How does others act? Were the activities appropriate?
Looking again, I feel that in particular there were way too many team workers. The group regarded as the conflict and tension that had occurred as negative, and folks were enthusiastic to avoid this whenever you can. Although our activities were appropriate given our situation and the task at hand, things may have been implemented in a more effective and designed way. Working with Allied Health Professionals Essay
From this representation, I have come to realise that some variety (although associated with disagreement) is positive, and eventually essential for good productivity. Additionally, although each team role is associated with some negative aspects, each is crucial once and for all team-working. I am going to bear all this at heart in future, and can no more shy away from some healthy issue.
Management of power and conflict
When the group satisfied after every individual’s research, there was some tension and disagreement in the group’s priorities, and the method by which the duty should be completed. As conflict sustained pressure installed, not helped by time constraints of the area arranging. The Tuckman stages of group development (1965) identify area of the Storming level as the group starting to settle disagreements and setting up priorities, however this is unachievable scheduled to lack of time available. Working with Allied Health Professionals Essay
As a result of this situation a clear leader surfaced, providing much needed structure and quality. She listened to everything that all had to say, somehow to be able to create an ground breaking environment whilst together bringing some degree of organisation into the proceedings, precisely what the group was positively looking for. She also had huge assurance in the group as a whole, emitting positivity and confidence, vital to the needs of the team at that time. But the storming stage had not been totally complete, the norming stage commenced because of this newly-found structure.
Even so, as I have described disagreements weren’t all entirely settled. This resulted in tension plus some continuing issue being present within the group throughout the rest of our time together. This is unfortunate, as one particular person in the group commenced to interpret some of the discussion to be a personal attack, thus becoming protective. However, I am pleased to say that on the day of the presentation we managed to reserve all hostility and presented our work proudly together so when a team.
From this research element, I have come to understand that time should be produced for healthy group development to allow time for issue resolution. Working with Allied Health Professionals Essay
Clinical Reasoning
One of the CAIPE principles of effective Interprofessional Education (2002) is to value the contribution of each professional within the individual good care pathway. As an organization, I think we demonstrated this, as there is much amicability in considering each other’s needs, tasks and alternative tasks to be able to reason assembly times and the amount and type of individual work each person took on. It was reassuring to realise that this is possible within interprofessionals.
One of the thoughts behind interprofessional learning is that it enables specialists ‘to learn with, from and about each other to improve collaboration and the quality of attention’. In conditions of my own personal experience of the group work I think I’ve certainly significantly increased my knowledge of other healthcare specialists alongside the undertaking of the duty. This module has allowed me to further appreciate the worthiness of the IPL activities that are set up within our learning, for example the observation of MDT meetings. I appreciate that my learning would reap the benefits of developing my specialized medical reasoning expertise further, and I’ve determined this as an important area for my professional development. The summary is a simple part of the Gibbs model of reflection, prompting reflection on what else I could have done. To assist this, I will continue to refer to an array of Holm and Stevenson’s representation questions:

How may i have improved the problem?
By easing my anxiety in having more rely upon my peers and in the group as a whole, my personal experience would have been a lot more positive. In addition, forward planning, including the environment of goals and early on decisions as to the way the group will continue to work would have been beneficial.
Do Personally i think as if I have learnt anything new about myself?
I have grown to be aware that I am able to be flexible in line with the needs of my group in the role that’s needed is of me. I see this as a confident concept, as during my time as a medical care practitioner, I’ll come across a diverse selection of situations, where malleability will be key.
Has it improved my thought process at all?
I attended to realise that folks are diverse in their characteristics, attitudes and values, and appreciate that variety is very positive within an organization setting. I have also come to realise that a degree of conflict is good for productivity and imagination (although time must be allocated for just about any turmoil to be settled).
