Reflective Practice
Throughout one’s education and career, reflection has been identified as an important skill. Numerous studies have been conducted involving reflection. In nursing, Tanner presented a 4-step model for clinical judgment: Noticing, Interpreting, Responding, and Reflecting. In the final step, there are two types of Reflection: 1) “IN Action” done at the moment of the experience; and 2) “ON Action” completed after the experience.
The University of Connecticut Center for Excellence compiled other reflective models such as DEAL (Describe, Examine, Articulate Learning); “What? So What? Now What” Model; 5R Framework, etc. to further facilitate your reflective practice.
During learning activities in your courses, and particularly at the end of each course, please REFLECT “ON Action” about your personal learning experiences during the course and their impact on your development in the program and career. Structure And Nursing Application of Knowledge Assignment
What did you notice as significant? Why was it relevant?
How did you interpret the material? Were there any assumptions or judgments made?
How did you respond as a result of noticing and interpreting during the course or program?
What was learned? What could you have done differently?
How can you apply what you learned to your own professional practice?
