Critical Appraisal of Research Using the CASP Tool: Benefits of Hospice Care Nursing
The systematic review on the subject of hospice care chosen is that by Parajuli et al. (2019). It investigates barriers faced by elderly patients who are suffering from cancer and require hospice care. The study is hereby critically appraised using the Critical Appraisal Skills Program (CASP) tool (Long et al., 2020).
1. Was there a clear statement of the aims of the research?
Yes, there was a clear statement of the aims and objective of the research. The investigators stated that the objective was to determine the current scholarly evidence on the barriers faced by older cancer patients in their attempts to access hospice care. 2. Is a qualitative methodology appropriate?
Yes, a qualitative research methodology would be appropriate under certain circumstances. Non-numerical data are collected and examined in qualitative research in order to gain a deeper understanding of concepts, opinions, or experiences (Creswell & Creswell, 2018). It can be used to unearth complex information about a problem or to generate original research ideas. |
3. Was the research design appropriate to address the aims of the research?
The research design in this case was indeed appropriate to address the aims of the research. The systematic review used is level I evidence and as such will provide the best scholarly proof that seniors with cancer face significant barriers in accessing hospice care. 4. Was the recruitment strategy appropriate to the aims of the research?
The recruitment strategy was appropriate for this study. Being a systematic review, it means a search was conducted in research databases to retrieve the appropriate studies. This was done according to PRISMA guidelines in five databases: CINAHL, PubMed, PsychINFO, Cochrane, and Embase. In this study, 19 articles met the inclusion criteria. |
5. Was the data collected in a way that addressed the research issue?
Indeed the data was collected in the proper way that addressed the issue at hand. In the studies chosen, data was collected in the prescribed way and so this reflected in the systematic review that was done using the same articles. |
6. Has the relationship between researcher and participants been adequately considered?
This being a systematic review, it is not primary research that allows the investigator to get into direct contact with the various research participants. The relationship between the researchers in this systematic review and the participants in the 19 different studies is therefore an indirect one. Benefits of Hospice Care Nursing Discussion Paper |
7. Have ethical issues been taken into consideration?
All ethical issues were taken into consideration within the context of the 19 studies included in the systematic review. This has been replicated by the investigators in the systematic review. The ethical issues taken into account include informed consent (autonomy), confidentiality, avoidance of harm to subjects (nonmaleficence), privacy, anonymity, beneficence, and justice (Haswell, 2019). |
8. Was the data analysis sufficiently rigorous?
The data analysis was indeed sufficiently rigorous as to warrant the conclusions that were made by the investigators. Benefits of Hospice Care Nursing Discussion Paper |
9. Is there a clear statement of findings?
There is a very clear statement of findings by the authors. According to the abstract, the following factors were shown to be associated with a lower likelihood of using palliative or hospice care: male gender identity, racial minority status, single status, poor socioeconomic level, living in a remote region, and fee-for-service enrollment. Using palliative or hospice care was hampered by a lack of communication with caregivers. |
10. How valuable is the research?
The research is extremely valuable because it sheds light on what is preventing access to hospice care for elderly cancer patients. This information can be used to better access to quality healthcare services (hospice care), as an important social determinant of health. As a systematic review, the research also provides the highest level of evidence possible at level I on the hierarchy of evidence. It therefore adds to the body of evidence-based practice knowledge available. Benefits of Hospice Care Nursing Discussion Paper |

Special Instructions:
Choose a systematic review of research related to your project proposal and published within the past 8 years. Critically evaluate and critique it using the CASP (Critical Appraisal Skills Programme) checklist for systematic reviews.
Using the CASP checklist, critically evaluate each aspect of the chosen research study, providing evidence and reasoning to support your evaluation. Identify strengths and weaknesses, discuss the implications of the findings, and suggest areas for improvement or further research.
Notes about checklist:
You must fill in the “comments†box for ALL questions (unless otherwise noted below). The comments should be in sentence format and should follow the rules of scholarly writing, good grammar, sentence structure, etc. Benefits of Hospice Care Nursing Discussion Paper
