Part 3: Fact Sheet

The opioid crisis is a public health concern that has adverse effects not only to the individuals using opioids but also their families and the healthcare sector at large. The pandemic has significantly increased in recent decades, further increase the burden of disease and disability in healthcare. The financial and economic implications of the crisis are part of the motivating efforts by all stakeholders to combat the monster. According to Compton & Jones, (2019), at least 47,000 people were reported death in the United States as a result of opioid overdose. To effectively overcome the opioid crisis, there is need to implement policies and this can be effective if critical stakeholders such as registered nurses and nurse practitioners are involved in informing public policy on the opioid crisis (Milstead, & Short, 2019; O’Rourke et al., 2017). The role of nurses and nurse practitioners in formulating these policies include the documentation of facts about the opioid crisis in form of policy briefs which are short, precise and easy to use by policy makers (DeMarco & Tufts, 2014).These policy briefs can also be based on evidence based practices that can easi;ly be identified by nurses given their experience with those affected by the pandemic.
