Most nursing students are kinesthetic learners who like to learn with hands-on experience. The active teaching/learning environment involves interaction, participation, and engagement. Through active learning, learners are challenged to use levels of critical thinking and decision-making, which is student-focused. Three teaching strategies that can promote active learning and be implemented in practicum settings are as follows : Journal of International Medical Research Essay Assignment Paper

Concept Mapping

Concept Mapping is an active learning strategy involving students learning complex phenomena by diagramming the concepts or sub-concepts (Fressola & Patterson,2016). Concept maps represent the relationships between ideas or concepts where each word or idea connects to another and links back to the original word or thought. The main advantage of this teaching strategy is the active involvement of students in this learning process, which helps in higher retention and deeper comprehension (Fressola & Patterson,2016). This strategy can be particularly effective for subjects involving complex interrelationships or assisting students to grasp abstract or challenging concepts. One limitation of concept mapping is that it can be time-consuming for students and instructors. Creating detailed concept maps can be lengthy, which may deter some students from using them regularly. Additionally, instructors may need to invest time in teaching students how to create effective concept maps and evaluate them (Billings & Halstead,2020). Educational Games

Educational games facilitate learning, enhance student collaboration, and maintain active, student-centered learning in a non-threatening environment (Boctor, 2013). One of the advantages of using games as a teaching strategy is that the students get immediate feedback during games through discussion of correct answers and their rationale (Fressola & Patterson,2016). Also, another advantage of games is the opportunity for instructors to facilitate discussion and clarify misconceptions (Boctor,2013). One limitation of using games in education is that they may only sometimes align perfectly with specific learning objectives or subject matter (Boctor,2013). Some educational concepts may be challenging to integrate into a game format effectively, and in such cases, the game can become more of a distraction than a learning tool.

Case Studies

Case studies foster metacognitive knowledge, retention, and recall (Billings &Halstead,2020). Associating the practical with the theoretical helps many students remember essential knowledge. The main advantage of case studies is that teachers assess their students’ critical thinking and evaluate student learning by evaluating their analytic reasoning and reflective judgment skills (Fressola & Patterson,2016). A case study is also an effective strategy for nursing students to narrow the gap between classroom learning and clinical practice ( Ma& Zhou,2022). One limitation of case studies is that students may get overly focused on the details of the case, and this narrow perspective might not fully prepare them for a range of diverse scenarios( Ma& Zhou,2022). Hi Simy, I agree with the decision to use these three research-based teaching methodologies as well as the carefully considered benefits and drawbacks that have been provided for each. Since complex concepts are frequently encountered in nursing education, concept mapping is particularly helpful in promoting active learning and deeper comprehension (Wu & Wu, 2020). However, the time-consuming aspect of making comprehensive concept maps is a real limitation, thus it is crucial for teachers to offer advice on how to develop effective maps. Additionally, stressing the value of using concept maps as a tool for learning rather than merely a chore can aid in overcoming this disadvantage (Machado & Carvalho, 2020). With immediate feedback and discussion initiation, educational games offer a fun and participatory way to learn. I agree that matching games to certain learning objectives might be difficult, but this constraint can be reduced with proper design and alignment. Teachers may make sure that games are consciously incorporated into the curriculum to support rather than hinder learning (Wu & Wu, 2020). As was already established, case studies help nursing educators bridge the gap between theory and practice. Future nurses must put a strong emphasis on analytical and critical thinking abilities. It is true that students occasionally concentrate too much on the specifics of a case. With the emphasis on the fact that the aim is to educate students for a variety of clinical circumstances, instructors can help students understand the larger principles and transferrable abilities learned from case studies in order to overcome this constraint. These techniques can be used into your practicum setting to produce a dynamic and interesting learning environment that accommodates various learning preferences and encourages a deeper comprehension of nursing ideas. In addition, constant evaluation and adaption can serve to lessen the drawbacks identified, ensuring that these techniques are useful teaching aids for instructors and students combined (Machado & Carvalho, 2020).
