Servant Leadership

Focusing on encouraging others through empowering and elevating individuals under their care is a trait of a servant leader (Sherman, 2019). A nurse servant leader always inquires about how they may assist their team in resolving issues and fostering their personal growth. To this end, servant leadership is essentially a component of transformational leadership (Robbins & Davidhizar, 2020). This is because transformational leaders empower, motivate, and inspire their subordinates. Transformational Leadership in Healthcare Today Essay Paper

Nurses can benefit from a servant leadership style in many ways. Because a servant leader listens and cares, it helps the nurse leader to communicate effectively. Subordinates will be more loyal to the organization as a result of servant leadership. Because they enjoy their jobs, junior personnel will be encouraged to participate in professional development (Sherman, 2019). The servant leader will gain the respect of her followers via her empathy, and they will then diligently perform the tasks she has assigned them.

At the bedside, servant leadership can be achieved by nurses when they work as a team under the clinical nurse leader. This includes consistent bedside handing over at the end of each shift. In a leadership position as a change nurse, one can implement servant leadership by being empathetic to staff, being a good listener, empowering subordinates, and practicing just culture (Linda & Nancy, 2019). This means not punishing one person for a mistake but looking at the wider organizational system. Transformational Leadership in Healthcare Today Essay Paper

Personal Reflection

One particular time that I experienced servant leadership was when I was still a novice in the nursing profession. I had not yet mastered using the electronic health record (EHR) system (especially the Patient Data Management System or PDMS) as I was interacting with it for the first time. The charge nurse I was working under took it upon herself to guide me every day until I became confident and competent in its use. This made me feel wanted and valued and the outcome was that I gave my best with resultant exceptional patient outcomes. I also became very competent in using the EHR system.
