Nursing involves direct interaction with patients, friends, and families to improve the care outcome. Nursing students face diverse challenges and obstacles in their clinical practicum. In light of this, they must devise strategies to ensure compliance with their learning needs and meet their patients’ needs. Setting smart goals is crucial to nursing students as it creates room for personal plans and instills inspiration and commitment to the learning sessions during their clinical placement. Smart goals benefit nursing students and can define the learning process and skillset development path. According to Steeb et al. (2021), student-directed practicum offers individualized learning experiences that must be aligned with individualized smart goals. Brilliant short-term goals can outline the stepwise approach to attaining the ultimate practicum objective. In light of this, the student needs to be informed on the key areas of concern and the effective approach to utilize the available time to meet the target objectives. The five-step framework outlined under the SMART goals improves the chances of achieving the target goals and enhances overall experiences during the practicum period.

The core goals I will adopt for my practicum cover the aspects of healthcare operations and the patient care process. The main areas I will focus on during the practicum include patient care, health promotion, relationship-building, nursing-related care, social service, and workplace efficiency. I will emphasize relationship-building involving other healthcare providers and patients. Kaiser and Westers (2018) noted the element of interdisciplinary teamwork in the healthcare field, although they also emphasized the need for nurse-only teamwork to improve patient experiences. The following statements highlight the smart goals I will adopt in the practicum experience and improve individual skills and knowledge in nursing practice and the patient care process.   1. Actively and accurately conduct patients’ focused assessment based on symptoms reported. At the end of the practicum experience, I want to perform the assessments with minimal preceptor prompts conclusively.
  2. Effectively formulate patient diagnoses and seek immediate feedback from the preceptor. I will consider the preceptor’s feedback in subsequent diagnoses. At the end of the practicum experience, I want to conduct the diagnoses with minimal help.
  3. Accurately document SOAP notes with the preceptor’s guidance to attain minimal corrections by the end of the practicum experience.
  4. Safely administer patients’ medication by adhering to the institutional requirements and the rights of administration of medications under the preceptor’s supervision during the placement period.
  5. Demonstrate the ability to maintain healthy and therapeutic relationships with the patients, friends, and families based on the national standards while conducting the health assessment.
  6. Reflect on my course work content in improving on my strengths and strengthening the weak points. Based on my current strengths and weaknesses, I want to reassess my competencies at the beginning and end of the practicum experience.
  7. Engage the clients and caregivers in intermittent health promotion and patient education. I will ask frequent questions to clarify their understanding of their disease process and presentation. At the end of the interactions, I want the patients to be able to describe the disease process and the relevant care to improve the treatment outcome.
  8. Gradually increase the patient load over the next few weeks. By the end of the practicum experience, I want to manage a full patient load with minimal preceptor experience.

  10. Promote interdisciplinary collaboration in patient care and healthcare operations. I want to interact with and engage diverse healthcare practitioners in addressing specific patient needs to promote therapeutic relationships between providers and clients.
  11. Develop time management skills to meet patient care needs. I want to progressively improve the time per patient and the number of patients I attend daily during the practicum period.
  12. Effectively make at least one oral presentation about a patient to the preceptor in an accurate and organized manner. I want to be comfortable presenting patients’ cases by the end of the practicum experience.

The practicum experience is instrumental in developing clinical skills and offers first-hand experience within the clinical practice. The smart goals will help navigate the practicum experience and help attain optimum benefits from the placement. Adhering to the placement objectives and establishing a good working relationship with other healthcare providers and the preceptor will ensure I achieve optimum outcomes from the experience.
