Evaluation tools in education are measures that help improve student learning and educational objectives. Evaluation tools need to be valid, reliable, and engaging for the students.
The first evaluation tool I believe we are all familiar with is skill performance checklist that we participated in during our skills lab. Skill performance tools evaluate the skill that the nursing student is attempting to master. A skill checklist is usually extracted from a nursing book or a clinical skills book (Mehdipour-Rabori et al., 2021). Skill checklists help the instructor identify deficiencies and areas that might need to be covered (Mehdipour-Rabori et al., 2021). A pro to using a checklist is that it lets the student know exactly what is expected of them and what to memorize to complete the task. It leaves little room for error on the instructor’s part as far as grading. One con about checklists is that they tend to lead to anxiety due to frequent evaluations or it creates stress in students due to lack of clinical practice time or an excessive number of students (Arkan et al., 2018). Another dominant nursing strategy used to evaluate clinical performance is observing students in clinical practice (Billings & Halstead, 2020). A con with this assessment is that the observations made by the instructor could be impacted by their personal values, attitudes, beliefs, and is hard to test for validity and reliability. This also can be skewed in that it depends on what the teacher is looking for. For example, if it is a medication pass one teacher might be focused on the student knowing their medication rights and the medication, whereas another teacher might solely be focused on their interaction with the patient. A pro of this evaluation method is that the outcome and objectives of the course should align with how the professor is grading and to evaluate if their objectives were met by the student’s performance.
The last evaluation tool is nursing care plans. Nursing care plans allow faculty to evaluate students’ ability to recognize a problem, prioritize needs and understand and interpret the patient’s individual health care needs (Billings & Halstead, 2020). A pro to this tool is that it enhances and encourages critical thinking skills by the student and reinforces patient safety. Oh, the dreaded skills competencies! Those provoke so much anxiety in students and often times, unnecessarily. The checklist is a great tool as it does give the student the exact assessment measures, step-by-step. However, the most important piece to skills competencies is the preparation and practice. As much as we tell students they need to be in the lab practicing and preparing, many focus on memorizing the skills check list and not the skill itself. This year we introduced a three-step approach…2 Ps and a T: practice independently, peer-to-peer check off, and then the teacher. I will let you know how that goes 🙂

Hi Professor-
I like how you mentioned peer-to-peer check offs. I think peer-to-peer evaluation is a great way to develop collaborative skills, build communication abilities, and promote professional responsibility (Billings &Halstead, 2020). Peer review takes away the pressure of an educator grading students which will sometimes put students at ease and able to perform without feeling under pressure. It also helps the students learn for themselves since they will be grading another student, they are able to see mistakes or take examples that they agree with. Another plus with peer review is it gives the grader a sense of accountability since the student needs to make sure their peer does a good job because they will one day be responsible for caring for patients. However, a potential con to this form of evaluation is some students might be biased towards other students or have their favorites (Billings &Halstead, 2020). Skill performance checklists do provide students with precise direction, ensuring they grasp objectives and eliminating grading subjectivity. However, as you noted, frequent exams might cause anxiety and make clinical practice time more difficult (Nagura-Ikeda et al., 2020). Personal biases can impact observation-based judgments, reducing their validity. It is critical to solve these issues in order to ensure justice. Nursing care plans can help improve critical thinking and patient safety. They assist students to spot difficulties and efficiently prioritize patient requirements. Nonetheless, I agree that the formulaic structure of care plans may stifle innovation and critical thought. Finding a happy medium between structure and flexibility might help care plans reach their full potential. Overall, each evaluation instrument has advantages and disadvantages, and the choice is based on the alignment of assessment objectives with intended learning results. It is critical for good clinical assessments to ensure validity, reliability, and student participation (Nagura-Ikeda et al., 2020). Hi Prof, I absolutely get your point of view on skill competencies increasing student concern. Your “2 Ps and a T” strategy appears to be promising. actual, students frequently favor memorization above actual grasp of the skill. Engaging students in individual practice, followed by peer assessment and final instructor evaluation, appears to be a balanced approach to emphasizing both preparation and performance. This technique has the potential to promote more thorough skill development while also alleviating some of the stress associated with examinations. Hello Baily, I wholeheartedly concur with your observations on peer-to-peer assessment. It is an excellent chance for students to hone critical cooperation and communication skills while also developing a feeling of professional responsibility (Bernaras et al., 2019). Moving away from educator-only grading can minimize performance pressure and enable more realistic demonstrations of expertise.
