The reasons why I chose Asthma is because, I grew up with it and I know the struggles of having it but not a lot of people do. I want to be able to provide insight into asthma just in case someone they know, or love has asthma, and they will be able to provide some guidance.

Some of the symptoms associated with Asthma are shortness of breath, wheezing, coughing, chest tightness, and low peak expiratory flow readings (measures the amount of air you breath out.)

Doctors will ask about your systems, such as wheezing, shortness of breath, coughing, along with your medical history and family history of asthma or allergies. They may also use a stethoscope to listen for abnormal sounds in your lungs.

Lung function tests, such as the peak flow measurement, helps assess how well your lungs are working. This test helps measure the amount of air you can exhale forcefully and how fasts you can do it.

In some cases, doctors might also recommend additional tests, such as allergy tests or chest X-rays, to rule out other possible causes of your systems. There are some treatment options available once you’ve been diagnosis are, inhaled bronchodilator, this helps with a quick relief by relaxing the muscles around the airways. Inhaled corticosteroids, these are for daily used to help reduce airway inflammation. Long – acting bronchodilators, used alongside corticosteroids for long term control. Lastly, a combination inhaler, this contains corticosteroids in long-acting bronchodilators providing both anti-inflammatory and bronchodilator effects.

The prognosis for asthma varies depending on the factors such as the severity of the condition, effectiveness of treatment, and lifestyle choices. Majority of asthma cases, systems can be controlled with medication and lifestyle adjustments. Asthma is a chronic condition, and it can’t be completely cured but can be managed. Every individual’s situation is unique, so it is best to discuss your prognosis with your doctor.

The body systems that asthma affects are the airways and lungs. The airways are tubes that carry air in and out of your lungs. If you have asthma, the airways can become inflamed and narrowed at times. This makes it harder for air to flow out of your airways when you breathe out. The inside walls of the airways in your lungs can become inflamed and swollen. In addition, membranes in your airway linings may secrete excess mucus. The results are an asthma attack. During the attack, your narrowed airways make it harder to breathe, you may cough and wheeze. While having an asthma attack affects your body, it can also affect you emotionally. The fear of having another attack could cause you to feel constantly anxious and afraid. What I have learned throughout this course is that while asthma may affect our lungs and airways, it can also affect our emotions as well, knowing the signs and when we should seek medical advice is the best way to know if you have asthma.

  • The main rationale for me selecting the topic of asthma is that I myself am affected. I have lived with asthma my entire life.
  • Due to the above fact, I am uniquely placed to understand the exact way that patients who have asthma live. I understand the way they feel as well as the daily struggles they engage in while living with the condition.
  • Therefore, the next part of the rationale for choosing this condition is that I would like to share my personal experiences with the condition so that someone else may be helped to understand it.

  • There are a number of known presentations of asthma as a respiratory illness. The presentation is restricted to the respiratory system, since asthma uniquely affects the airway passages and interferes with exhalation (Hammer & McPhee, 2018; Jameson et al., 2022).
