My personal philosophy of nursing education hinges on the elements of learner engagement, inclusivity, and the provision of a learning environment that is dynamic to better equip learners with skills that meet the contemporary needs in nursing practice. Personal Philosophy of Nursing Education
One of the core values in my philosophy of nursing education is providing an engaging learning environment for learners. This can be achieved through the development of instructional platforms that foster a collaborative process in nursing learning. For instance, the learners should be provided with instructions and information in groups, and also engage in discussions to solve challenges and brainstorm in the process of knowledge acquisition. Additionally, the instructor needs to assume a hands-on approach in ensuring that individual and group assessments receive feedback and the necessary guidance to the learners. The engagement process in learning leverages the different perspectives of the learners about the knowledge shared by the instructor and acquired from the learning material (Barbour & Schuessler, 2019). Through the collaborative learning process, the instructor has the opportunity to identify learners facing difficulty in understanding and articulating the subject matter, and this could effectively provide the opportunity to deliver the knowledge within the realm of their learning preferences. Moreover, in such an environment, the instructor assumes the role of a mentor for the learners; hence, creating a learning environment where the nurse students are free to ask questions and to gain extensive knowledge on various topics.
The second element of the philosophy is inclusivity, which is a function of reflecting on the cultural differences within the learning environment, as well as the cognitive capabilities of the learners. It is apparent that the contemporary learning environment is characterized by the presence of learners from different cultural backgrounds; therefore, the instructional process has to consider the associated barriers and opportunities for enhanced performance of every learner. For instance, one has to consider language barriers when providing information to the learners, and also identify the influences of the cultural contexts associated with the respective learners (Barbour & Schuessler, 2019). Additionally, it is also apparent that different learners have varying capabilities in conceptualizing information delivered in different formats. While some learners may have preference for instructional processes that are exclusively text-based, others may prioritize a learning environment that is associated with demonstrations and pictorial representations of the information. My learning philosophy requires one to actively identify these unique preferences and ensure that the information delivery process accommodates every learner within the group (Culha, 2019). Lastly, my philosophy of nursing education also focuses on assuming a dynamic process in the delivery of information. For instance, the use of online learning platforms is an innovative approach toward improving the learning process, whereby the learners can engage in group discussions and also contact the instructor through the platforms (Culha, 2019). The dynamic element of the philosophy also inclines toward the development of innovative ways of delivering information, while still aligning the learning process with the standards set for the curriculum.
What is your view of teaching?
The basic objective of teaching is transferring information and skills from the instructor to the learners, but my view on the same is that it should be a guidance process that is characterized by inspiring the learners and engaging them actively to conceptualize and actualize the information. I believe that the teaching process should provoke learners to assume critical thinking capacity on the subjects, and also provide them with the ability to solve the prevailing problems in nursing. The students should be motivated to continuously improve their knowledge and skills, and to embrace the learning continuum associated with the nursing profession. My objective toward achieving this requirement is inspiring collaboration among the learners and disseminating information in a manner that encourages the learners to engage in further research and practice (Culha, 2019). I believe that each cohort of learners is different; hence, the approaches toward teaching different groups have to be dynamic. Most importantly, I believe that teaching should be a learning experience for both the students and the instructors; hence, it should be inclusive and engaging. What will be your teaching approach or teaching methods?
My teaching method entails the development of an environment where the needs of the respective learners are emphasized. The teaching process should foster a highly participative learning process, and this is attainable through the empowerment of the learners to be direct their learning process, while transferring the acquired knowledge into skills through practice. I believe that the delivery of theoretical information to students is not sufficient in facilitating effective learning; therefore, I focus on providing opportunities for the subject matter to be put into practice. The preferred teaching method involves the creation of a collaborative environment, which is characterized by the presence of group discussions and assignments. This approach ensures that there is a focus on participative learning through peer teaching (Barbour & Schuessler, 2019). The approach is effective in improving the communication skills of the learners, while introducing them to a team playing environment that is the basis of nursing practice. I also prioritize a teaching method that is based on cases, whereby the learners reflect on real situations in nursing to cultivate effective critical thinking skills, and to apply their knowledge into problem-solving. Additionally, my teaching methods involve a substantial level of practice in the learning process, particularly though simulations and guiding learners through labs simulated through technology. This approach guarantees that learners acquire both theoretical knowledge and practical information that builds their skills in nursing practice (Mannisto et al., 2020). Achieving the educational outcomes
The preferred teaching method is effective in producing competent nursing practitioners because it offers a holistic learning process, in terms of knowledge and skill development. The interactive learning environment builds the capacity for each learner to engage in team strategies, which is a requirement in the contemporary nursing practice (Barbour & Schuessler, 2019). Moreover, since the method utilizes case-based learning and practice, it is effective in fostering an evidence-based approach in practice for the learners.
Methods for teaching special populations
Cultural aspects like language barriers, age groups, and gender are considered in my teaching approaches. I am aware of the influence of these factors on the learning preferences of the students. For instance, the older generation is likely to prefer the use of traditional instructions and practice processes, whereas the younger generation highlights preference for the use of technology in the learning process (Mannisto et al., 2020). These considerations are applied with each cohort by analyzing the individual preferences and using a dynamic teaching approach to achieve an inclusive learning environment. Additionally, when teaching special learners, I prioritize innovative instructional platforms that incorporate visual presentations, and the use of simplified instructions and information delivery processes. Theoretical underpinnings
My philosophy is guided by the theory of constructivism which emphasizes on the learners being actively involved in constructing knowledge. The learners acquire theoretical information that is rapidly turned into practice through skill development platforms. Two of the MSN program goals that should be targeted include the improvement of leveraging technology in the learning process, and advancing the application of pedagogy in learning. The former entails continuous improvement of the application of technology in learning and practice, which is a function of improving skills and promoting safer and quality services for patients (Jackson, 2022). The latter is a function of continuous improvement of the teaching methods to serve the unique needs of learners in the contemporary nurse learning environment, which is characterized by diversity and the need to provide inclusive instructional platforms.
Teaching/Learning Strategy for innovation in Nursing Education
Active learning strategies are integrated in the philosophy, whereby the learners participate in group discussions and simulated practice to convert the theoretical knowledge to skills (Jackson, 2022). This strategy is effective in inspiring participation, and engagement with the learners provides guidance toward acquiring the relevant knowledge and skills in nursing. Successful learners under this strategy become competent nurses with the ability to solve contemporary problems through critical thinking and the application of an evidence-based approach in practice.
