Teaching Methods and Settings

Student engagement and participation in academic learning activities are crucial for the student’s academic success. As such nurse educators must identify and implement effective teaching strategies that promote student engagement and participation. This helps to provide high-quality education to students which prepares them to effectively provide safe and quality patient care. This paper discusses different teaching methods that encourage active participation and those effective for cognitive skills. psychomotor skills and affective skills.

Teaching strategies that are effective in enhancing the learner’s active participation in academic activities are technology-based. Technology-based strategies are those that utilize technology to engage students in learning activities. In the 21st century, technology has become an integral aspect in every aspect including in the education system. According to (Ghasemi et al., 2020) utilization of online technologies, online teaching techniques, virtual communities, and asynchronous discussion boards is effective in enhancing active participation by the learners. Online technologies such as Kahoot in classrooms increase engagement as they incorporate quizzing programs that learners remain attentive to as they act as a means for formative assessment. The asynchronous discussion boards allow students to engage with other learners and their educators where members contribute to a discussion by commenting and responding to each other. Posting videos on different platforms is also effective as students are expected to like and comment on the videos which is effective in enhancing student participation and engagement. Competencies in psychomotor, affective, and cognitive clinical skills are supported by training in practical examination, patient management, procedural, and communication skills. The integration of online and blended platforms teaching techniques is important in developing competency in affective, cognitive, and psychomotor clinical skills. In the psychomotor domain, blended techniques are effective as they involve the combination of online synchronicity, virtual and in-person group work, and tutor-student engagement. Study results conducted by Enoch et al. (2022) showed that students demonstrated adequate psychomotor skills when a blended approach of online and face-to-face teaching methods was utilized. In the affective domain, integrating online teaching methods such as e-learning groups and virtual simulation training such as Zoom enhances affective skill competency as it allows interactive group teaching and effective transfer of communication. Lastly, cognitive skills competency can be better developed by integrating the blended teaching method involving a combination of online techniques and face-to-face methods. Through both students can have meaningful discussions with tutors which is important in developing clinical skills.

The teaching method that best works in my future area of practice is the online and blended techniques. The online method involved the integration of technology in teaching and learning. The online learning method allows learning management systems where students can access and read content online before synchronous lectures are given. This allows students to learn important clinical practices and skills in a standardized and controlled environment. In addition, it supports self-paced learning where students can learn more by accessing the course content and later engaging robustly in classrooms. The blended teaching method involves combining asynchronous, independent, student-centered, and self-paced as components of effective teaching. As such using various strategies such as a blend of online and face-to-face components will be effective in enhancing student learning. In conclusion, nurse educators should adopt different teaching strategies to enhance participation and the transition of theoretical knowledge into practice. Such strategies include the use of technology to enhance learning participation and engagement. In addition, clinical skills such as cognitive, affective, and psychomotor competencies are effectively developed by using different teaching strategies. Such include blended and online techniques. As such, nurse educators must assess their student learning needs to identify effective teaching approaches.
