The course I am proposing is an asthma education class for the parents of children with asthma within the inpatient setting. Asthma is a leading cause of pediatric hospitalizations across the world and the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (2023) says “Even though asthma is controllable, it is estimated that 50% of children with asthma have uncontrolled asthma” (para 5). Thus, children experience exacerbations ranging from mild to severe and if they do not get proper ongoing medical attention can become dangerously ill. Knowledge is power and giving parents the information they need to take care of their child to the best of their ability is critical. A learning objective for this course is: At the end of the course, the learner will demonstrate safe administration of asthma medications based on their child’s medication regimen”. One teaching strategy I want to utilize is hands on demonstration and return demonstration. Proper administration of medications is vital to ensuring that a child’s asthma is well managed. As a pediatric nurse of five years, I have encountered countless parents who are unaware to give their child their bronchodilator before their corticosteroid. It is also a common occurrence that parents do not utilize a spacer with an MDI or give their child their corticosteroid at all. Therefore, hands on demonstration with parents will aid in closing the gap of improper administration. Hands on demonstration allows parents to practice with the proper equipment and get a tangible feel for how to do something. With proper guidance and instruction, parents can feel comfortable asking questions, addressing concerns, and properly administering their child’s medications. Another teaching strategy I want to implement in this course is differentiated instruction. This allows the educator to adjust their teaching based on the students’ academic abilities and learning needs (Tomlinson, 2023). This is a valuable teaching strategy as people speak a variety of languages, have different education levels, and may need more time to become comfortable with new concepts. Thus, I would like to be sure the written material is available in a variety of languages and that the educator is familiar with interpretation services. It is also imperative that the material is written in layman’s terms and easy to understand. Thanks Adrienne for the insightful piece presented in your post. Indeed asthma is a timely topic in healthcare and more especially among pediatric patients based on its overall health consequences. Indeed, asthma is a leading cause of hospitalization among children in the world and its effects can affect growth and development among children. Uncontrolled asthma among children is fatal and is thought to be caused by receiving treatments with poor knowledge on how to utilize the medications; receiving treatments that are ineffective or not receiving treatment at all. Therefore, parent education on the administration of medications will be of significant impact on the management and treatment of asthma among children. The proposed teaching strategies, differentiated instruction and Return Demonstrations are essential in achieving the states learning objective for this course: At the end of the course, the learner will demonstrate safe administration of asthma medications based on their child’s medication regimen”. Return demonstrations for instance asks patients re-state what they have learned from the previous instructions in a manner likely to suggest that they are to teach the content to you. That way, it helps to ascertain that the parents to asthmatic patients have understood the medication administration instructions. Return demonstrations is an essential tool among nursing students as it helps them to gain knowledge of the various nursing procedures by grasping ideas on the role of nurses in taking care of patients (Chang & Lai, 2021). Differentiated instruction on the other hand is a teaching concept that emphasizes on three main components; content, process, and product (Smale-Jacobse et al., 2019). This approach helps the instructor to proactively plan various approaches to meet the various needs of parents in terms of what they need to learn, how they learn and how they will demonstrate that they have learned. This approach helps to ensure that the parents nursing asthmatic patients are conversant with the various treatment regimes for their asthmatic children.
