Exposures
The selected article evaluated in this study is “Exposures to fine particulate air pollution and respiratory outcomes in adults using two national datasets: A cross-sectional study.” In this study, the goal is to evaluate the connection existing between the ambient fine particulate matter concentrations and respiratory results in adults using air pollution and health outcome data to assess sensitivity across people of different ethnicities and race. The results of this study aims at showing how air pollution affects respiratory outcomes in adults from different backgrounds. Therefore, this study comprises a critique of the selected article and includes an analysis of public health significance of the research. Air Pollution And Respiratory Outcomes In Adults Essay Paper
Public Health Significant of the Study
Public health deals with the protection and improvement of health of the people living in a community. Achieving public health is aided by promotion of healthy lifestyles and research on prevention of diseases and injury, and detection and response to infections and illnesses. Air pollution is a public health issue that affects a majority of people in society. Pollutants are a major public health concern that is the cause of respiratory ailments and other diseases that are sources of mortality and morbidity among the people (Manisalidis et al., 2020). The given study aims at determining how certain particulate matter concentrations in the atmosphere plays an integral role in causing in respiratory ailments. The goal of the study is to find the correlation between the particulate matter and respiratory issues. The findings will help in shedding light as to whether particulate matter in the atmosphere as a result of air pollution is the cause of respiratory illnesses in adults. The findings will impact the majority and are concerned about the people in community settings. Thus, this shows the importance of this research on public health. Critique of the Methodology
The study used findings provided by respondents in the 2002-2005 health interview survey and were linked to the particulate matter data from the AirData system (Nachman & Parker, 2012). Logistical regression was employed to evaluate increases in concentrations of particulate matter and self-reported respiratory ailments such as asthma, chronic bronchitis, and sinusitis. Accordingly, this methodology utilized a large sample size, which means that the study can easily be generalized. There were over 110,000 adult respondents, which is a large sample size. At the same time, the methodology was effective in yielding the results that were acquired (Nachman & Parker, 2012). The method used was valid in providing accurate results. However, in this study, it was challenging to determine whether the differences observed across people of different races and ethnicity are due to challenges in classification of exposures and outcomes, physiologic condition as a form of response to the particulate matter, and other variables that could not be controlled. Most of these factors have not been addressed in this study and thus, reliability is somewhat affected. Air Pollution And Respiratory Outcomes In Adults Essay Paper
Results
The results gathered showed that non-Hispanic blacks are at a high risk of sensitivity of asthma outcomes from the exposure to particulate matter. Increased exposure to particulate matter could lead to sinusitis among the people. However, asthma and respiratory issues disproportionately affect people of different races and ethnicities with non-Hispanic blacks being at the highest risk.
Appraising of Findings
The findings were accurately acquired from the methodology done in the study. Nonetheless, there is still lack of ability to yield conclusions on the connection existing between exposure to particulate matter and asthma in patients from the Hispanic descent. Besides, the data from the monitors are not an ideal surrogate for measurements on personal exposure. Ambient air is useful in predicting the quality of air in certain microenvironments. Asides from that, the study fulfills the needed and stated objective as researchers had purposed. Air Pollution And Respiratory Outcomes In Adults Essay Paper
