Nurse/Patient Empowerment
The healthcare setting has been evolving with new roles and practices being adopted. According to Cuzco et al. (2021), one of the changes that have reshaped the nursing practice is the role of nurses which has extended behind bedside care to include patient advocates, educators, and patient empowerment. According to Brown et al. (2008), patient empowerment is recognized as a process in which nurses help patients adopt self-care practices to improve their healthy journey. In other words, it allows patients to gain greater control in making decisions regarding factors affecting their health. Nurses utilize diverse indicators to effectively influence their patients and/or colleagues. With patients becoming part of collaborative care, the trend has seen the adoption and implementation of evidence-founded care and patient-fostered interventions. This paper reviews nurses’ role in patient empowerment, including using diverse quality indicator tools to effectively influence patients’ decisions. The ideology of nurse-patient empowerment is critical because it instills in patients the confidence to embrace and make decisions regarding their health. Cuzco et al. (2021) identified that nurses play a critical role in the process. They ensure patients have access to the right information, the basis for conscious decisions, and a roadmap to improve their health. Different strategies can be adopted, including being their source of information or providing access to reputable care education. Once patients have acquired reputable knowledge about their condition, they are more likely to adopt alternative care procedures to improve their quality of life. More information on their disease provides them with alternatives, possible risks, and benefits associated with any decision made.
Quality measure has become critical in the nursing overall healthcare sector, used as the basis for advanced and improved care delivery and nursing practices. The National Database of Nursing Quality Indicators (NDNQI) enables researchers and nurses to identify diverse workforce bases elements which can impact patient care outcomes, i.e., nursing process and nurse staffing (The National Database of Nursing Quality Indicators® (NDNQI®) | OJIN: The Online Journal of Issues in Nursing, n.d). The database provides nurses with powerful tools to aid them in decision-making, improving their ability to empower patients. Environmental Research And Public Health Assignment Essay Paper
Healthcare facilities adopt different strategies and measures to empower the nursing staff using quality improvement data. According to Garrard et al. (2016), understanding patient outcomes and quality improvement tools helps the healthcare workforce adopt interventions that improve care overall. Regarding my organization, there has been teamwork and collaborative inter-professional care, which improves decision-making, manageable workloads, and sharing information to improve the patient experience. On the other hand, the institution has provided nurses with access to research material and other medical platforms, helping them engage with the outside world and hence fostering the generation and adoption of better and effective care practices which are evidence and patient founded hence better care and decision-making regarding care delivery. An organized procedure called quality improvement examines and reviews health services to raise the standard of treatment or practice. The empowerment of the nurse and high-quality patient care are two sides of the same coin. The empowered team affects patient care quality and safety, staff morale, productivity, retention, and related expenses (Barchielli et al., 2022). An example of patient empowerment includes the need for lifestyle change for a patient diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. When Pete (not his real name) was diagnosed with diabetes, he felt it was more of a death sentence. However, after a couple of sessions, he understood the condition better. While he was advised to start using a medication, the alternative approach includes healthy eating, regular exercise, weight loss, and constant blood sugar monitoring, which was happily embraced. Four months into the new self-care practices, he was positive for the condition and committed to self-care practices that effectively manage diabetes.
In conclusion, quality improvement and patient empowerment have become inseparable, with an increasing focus on better patient care and evidence-based, cost-effective intervention. Nurses have become critical stakeholders in healthcare. Their input has remained critical to the success of degeneration and implementation of quality care and improved patient experience. Utilizing the NDNQI database has provided quality improvement tools enabling nurses to improve processes and practices, which contribute to improving patient care outcomes.
