Complete the required worksheet after reading the assigned article for the session. The NR439 Reading Research Literature Worksheet Rubric must be used to answer each of the graded criterion for the following:
Purpose of the Study The purpose of the study was to assess the concept of practice readiness and its determination. The study also sought to define practice readiness and outline the process used to assess graduate practice readiness.
Type of Research & the Design The study was a qualitative research in nature. The research design was a case study which is an in depth study or examination into a research subject. The case study method supports the purpose of research by allowing the researchers to have a detailed evaluation and analysis of practice readiness, a multidimensional concept in real life and add to the gap of knowledge in the research.
Sample The sample size comprised 67 healthcare professionals from four acute healthcare organizations in one of the states in Australia. The participants were aged between 27 and 65 years, had an average of 18.5 years in practice, and had 13.7 years’ experience as graduate nurses. The sampling method used was purposive sampling, where four professional groups that largely interacted with graduate nurses were identified. Electronic fliers were sent through the heads of departments of the four professional groups, and potential participants were requested to contact the researcher directly. A chain referral process (snowball sampling) was used to increase the number of participants. Reading Research Literature Worksheet Discussion Paper
Data Collection Data was collected using a semi-structured approach and focus group discussions. The semi-structured interview had pre-determined questions, and each participant was interviewed at their convenience for 30–75 minutes. The interviews were semi-audiotaped and later transcribed by a professional.
Data Analysis The data collected from each participant was analyzed individually. Then, all the data was analyzed collectively using NVivo data management system software. A grounded theory approach was used in data coding, categorization, and grouping. Major categories and themes associated with practice readiness were identified and integrated into the research aim.
Limitations The research findings are limited to a single state in Australia, which makes it hard to generalize the findings to a larger population both at the national and international levels. The findings are skewed toward the nursing field, and the sample size was also small, which makes it hard to transfer the findings to larger populations.
Findings/Discussion The study established that practice readiness is a complex concept that comprises personal, clinical, and professional capabilities. Graduate nurses require the necessary confidence level, competence, and experience as registered nurses for safe practice. The level of confidence is a critical factor in determining practice readiness. An agreed-upon definition of practice readiness is necessary to avoid subjectivity and ensure the practice readiness assessments support the needs of graduate nurses. Reading Research Literature Reading through research literature helps the reader build a wider perspective and develop the confidence to think outside the box. Reading is an integral part of research because it adds to the existing knowledge and improves the overall understanding of a research topic. It also helps in identifying credible information, recognizing the limitations of a study, and avoiding putting them into practice. Reading research literature helps in staying abreast of clinically relevant research and modern evidence-based practices necessary for achieving and maintaining clinical competence.
