Arguably, democracy does not require equality of income or wealth. The justification for this is that democracy is a political system where political power is held by the people through free and fair elections that are conducted every so often. In the United States for instance, political leaders are elected every four years by the electorate and required to serve them impartially with no any favouritism. A second justification is that a democracy is a political system where people are free to express their views and interests. The important aspect about democracy is that, among many other benefits, is that it promotes social justice and the redistribution of wealth through policies such as progressive taxation and social welfare programs. Given all these, this political system does not necessitate for there to be absolute equality of income or wealth.
