Factors Influencing Obesity in American Adults
Obesity in the United States is a critical health issue. For instance, in 2022, statistics show that approximately 36 per cent of Americans have the condition, while globally, approximately one billion individuals have obesity (Commodore-Mensah et al., 2018). Through such realization, the World Health Assembly has formulated a Global Action Plan Call to curb obesity. According to Di-Cesar et al. (2019), there is a need for healthcare organizations to formulate effective policies to curb the rising rate of obesity. That is because the condition brings many other chronic illnesses such as cardiovascular diseases, type 2 diabetes, stroke and coronary artery diseases. That means that once an individual becomes obese, their functionality reduces, thus preventing them from enjoying their daily activities since they may also develop conditions like breathlessness and back and joint pains (Curley, 2019). Obesity destabilizes individuals’ socioeconomic status, including income, education and employment. For instance, if an individual from a low socioeconomic status starts struggling with obesity, they may struggle when trying to intervene, especially if other secondary chronic conditions like cardiovascular diseases arise. That is because low socioeconomic status is associated with a lower income that may not provide obese individuals with the privilege of enrolling in a weight loss program.
Consequently, poor education is intertwined with low socioeconomic status since individuals may not have ample knowledge of the kind of nutrition they need to consume or avoid. That is unlike those individuals from high socioeconomic levels who can easily access healthcare information from nearby healthcare facilities. That is because most individuals with higher socioeconomic status have a higher income that can help them subscribe to weight loss programs or to healthcare organizations’ websites to receive weekly, monthly or yearly health booklets. Besides the negative effects on socioeconomic status, obesity also portrays a negative psychological effect on the patients, increasing morbidity and mortality rates. According to Curley (2019), the main psychological effects imposed by obese conditions on the patients include depression, low self-esteem, poor life quality and eating disorders. All these psychological factors correlate with the obese individual’s gender and age. The main reasons most obese individuals have psychological issues regarding the 21st-century stereotypes of modern bodies include tone and youthful, slim bodies. Hence, most people believe that perfect bodies are proportional, making society look down upon obese individuals. Such stereotypes may cause these obese people to become anxious and depressed, leading to suicide or other complex conditions like being anorexic. All these factors can be considered complex metabolic syndrome that incorporates different risk factors and conditions, including high blood pressure, abdominal obesity, and abnormal triglyceride and cholesterol levels (Curley, 2019). Increased metabolic syndrome prevalence rates have started being a public health concern, thus the need to engage in evidence-based research in determining the right interventions to reduce obesity cases. The main way to intervene in the obesity epidemic is by involving the community, especially in creating awareness concerning active living and healthy eating in different settings. According to Inoue et al. (2018), one strategy is ensuring that obese adults are introduced to ways to manage their healthy food environments. Currently, there are a variety of policies and programs that leads to the formulation of healthy community food. Such factors include providing farmers’ market and supermarket incentives to ensure that their businesses in remote areas to ensure that they place calorie and nutrient contents on fast food menus and restaurants. Also, such policies are essential since they will aid in supporting and implementing nutritional standards for the whole community. Also, healthcare organizations must establish areas with the highest number of obese adults and effective programs to help the patient population lose weight and offer psychological support during the weight loss journey (Inoue et al., 2018). That is because such programs help the patients set SMART goals while adjusting these goals whenever necessary. Hence, in conclusion, since obesity is a global epidemic that increases mortality and morbidity rates of the world population, it will be essential to formulate effective strategies to curb its prevalence.
