The Strategic Management of Health Care Organizations Discussion
Who determines the values of the health care organization? What values do you think should be shared by all health care organizations? Why?
Values of a healthcare organization can be defined as the guiding principles of an organization that provides a direction and purpose for all the operations. The main purpose of healthcare facilities is to provide holistic and personalized care services to all patients with diverse healthcare issues (Schmidt & McArthur, 2018, January). Therefore, the top-level executive in collaboration with organizations, people, and institutions around the world working together determines the values of healthcare organizations by ensuring the restoration of human values in healthcare. Additionally, Ginter, Duncan, & Swayne, (2018) highlight that the top-level managers and executives cooperate to develop the most appropriate values and core principles that healthcare organizations should be bound to thus guiding the behavior and conduct of all the employees in the facility. The values of healthcare organizations are determined over a long period of time and therefore, effective and appropriate values are always developed to keep all healthcare facilities in check because they provide services to patients with diverse health issues. Cooperation, compassion, respect for persons, commitment to integrity and ethical practice, justice in healthcare, motivation, and commitment to excellence are some of the values that should be shared by all healthcare organizations (Ginter, Duncan, & Swayne, 2018). These values should be shared by all healthcare organizations because they represent overreaching goals that motivate scientifically sound and effective methods of care. For instance, motivation is a value shared in all healthcare organizations and it helps in motivating all members within the organization to provide high-quality services that improve patient outcomes. On the other hand, Ginter, Duncan, & Swayne, (2018) explain that cooperation is another important value that is applied in healthcare facilities through care coordination and interprofessional collaboration to ensure that patients are put in appropriate treatment plans and that other diseases that would otherwise go unnoticed are treated. Additionally, compassion and respect for persons are other imperative values that should be applied in all healthcare organizations because all providers should ensure that all the medications and interventions applied in the clinical practice are safe for patient use. Also, respect for persons should be observed through cultural sensitivity (Ginter, Duncan, & Swayne, 2018). It is important to understand that patients are respected in various ways that include treating patients with honesty, respecting patient views, choices, and decisions, and respecting patients’ autonomy. All healthcare organizations should be committed to integrity and ethical practice. In so doing, all nurses and other healthcare providers should deliver healthcare services honestly and adhere to all nursing ethics as well as other clinical practice guidelines that promote good health (Schmidt & McArthur, 2018, January). Additionally, all healthcare facilities should be committed to excellence by providing high-quality healthcare services by employing competent and qualified providers with experience and expertise in delivering high-quality services. Experienced and qualified providers have the ability to use technological innovations to improve healthcare services as well as prevent disease through patient education during discharge (Ginter, Duncan, & Swayne, 2018). Besides, nurses and other providers are encouraged to ensure that justice exists in healthcare. This is done by adhering to nursing codes of ethics to advocate for patients. Nurses have an ethical responsibility of serving as the voice of patients in that they advocate for patients by ensuring that patients have a change in medication prescription when they do not respond to the prescribed medication (Ginter, Duncan, & Swayne, 2018). Therefore, it is important that all healthcare organizations share these values because it promotes the delivery of high-quality services, and improves patient safety and trust in healthcare providers.
