Community Health Nursing
The suggested course that applies to the current curriculum design is community health nursing. The course synthesizes public health practice and nursing to promote and improve the health of populations. It integrates fundamental concepts of clinical nursing, community practice, and public health to address the factors that impact the health and well-being of communities. It also applies evidence-based research to community health needs to deliver care that is based on evidence and science. The main focus of community health nursing is on determining the socioeconomic and cultural needs of populations and adjusting care to match the needs (Escarce, 2019). The course is a one-semester program that enables learners to develop nursing skills and collaborate with other healthcare professionals to identify the healthcare needs of minority groups and identify ways to improve their quality of life. It guides learners to take an objective approach toward assessing healthcare disparities in populations and determining the causes of the inequalities. Most nursing education schools lack programs that equip learners with the knowledge and capabilities in the areas of community health disparities. Therefore, during the course period, learners identify and collaborate with community organizations to determine specific health-related challenges affecting communities in underserved regions. During such interactions, learners address the racial prejudices that exist against such minority groups and develop ways to address them and improve their lives. The program will enable the learners to achieve the following objectives:
The community health nursing course is undertaken under the Master of Science program. The main elements of the program include leadership, consistency, and an evidence-based curriculum (Lee & Willson, 2019). Additionally, nursing education integrates concepts from physical sciences, arts, and public health. The program equips nursing students with skills and knowledge to address the healthcare challenges in the current environment. The course will enable learners to develop research skills, technological knowledge, and primary care expertise to improve health outcomes. Program evaluation will occur through formative and summative assessment methods. Learners will engage in peer assessment and fill pro formas that provide feedback for other students. The assessment will occur at the end of each month to examine learner progress. Additionally, students will write reflective journals every week to describe their progress and experiences in the community health clinic. Learners will also be required to write a report at the end course. The report will integrate classroom knowledge and clinical experiences to determine whether learners achieved the program outcomes.
Memo to Department Supervisor
To whom it may concern:
The memo aims to introduce a new course that will be integrated into the next cohort of MSN students. The name of the course is community health nursing. The course aims to enable nursing students to develop advanced knowledge and capabilities to address health inequalities and disparities in different populations in the United States. It integrates concepts from different fields including public health, arts, and social sciences to provide skills and knowledge that can be applied to improve healthcare quality in the U.S health system. Research and public health statistics show that different communities, ethnic groups, and races have varying degrees of accessibility to healthcare services. Studies show that minority groups are less likely to access high-quality care than majority groups (Escarce, 2019). Additionally, the minority groups experience inequalities regarding the availability of services such as treatment, testing, and healthcare education. The statistics raise significant concerns for our institution since our mission is to contribute to the elimination of these inequalities by ensuring our students have the knowledge and skills to address them. It is the appeal of different players in the healthcare system for education institutions to prepare nurses who can deliver healthcare services inside and outside the primary and acute care settings. This necessitates the institutions to integrate courses that address the social and economic determinants of health into the nursing program (Fenton et al., 2017). Previously, nurses lacked the capabilities to assess and address the socioeconomic and cultural determinants of health since the concepts were not included in the nursing education programs.
The National League for Nursing (NLN) Commission lists the program details under the Nursing Education accreditation requirements. The agency plays a key role in expanding nursing practice by defining the eligibility criteria for the nursing profession (The National Advisory Council on Nurse Education and Practice, 2020). Standard V requires nurses to understand the significance of diversity in community settings. Hence, nursing programs must impart learners with knowledge regarding organizational and community healthcare needs. The proposed program accomplishes the requirements since it equips nursing students with the skills to assess and identify the healthcare needs of marginalized communities. The course also enables them to understand the social, economic, and cultural determinants of health. It further promotes inclusion by allowing students to unlearn the racial prejudices and myths that they hold about minority groups. The approach enables learners to apply the knowledge acquired in class to real-life situations. Therefore, rather than memorizing course content, they aim to understand, interpret and integrate it into population and patient experiences to improve health outcomes. Furthermore, the Institute of Medicine requires nursing education and practice to focus on disease prevention and public care in addition to acute care. Nurses should develop skills to provide primary care while working with multi-disciplinary teams to develop evidence-based interventions to promote health and improve the quality of care services. At the end of the training, learners will use summative evaluation methods including report preparation to examine whether they have achieved their intended outcomes. Additionally, during the training period, learners will analyze four summative articles that focus on the four program outcomes. The students will also develop a reflective journal that will explain their learning experiences throughout the course.
The community health nursing course will occur formally every Monday and Wednesday between 11:00 am and 1:00 pm. Learners will also be required to undertake weekly visits to the public health clinic at their convenient time. The course contributes to the organization’s mission and goals since it emphasizes health promotion, evidence-based practice, and leadership. It also expands nurses’ knowledge by integrating concepts from public health, social and physical sciences, and arts. The curriculum review committee will review the course over the coming two weeks.
I look forward to the positive reception of the curriculum and its subsequent integration into the MSN program. Publication manual of the American Psychological Association Essay
