Statistical Tests
The choice of a statistical test depends on study design, purpose, data distribution, and variable types (Nihan et al., 2020). The purpose of this paper is to discuss a selected statistical test used in nursing research, the level of measurement for the test, and an example of the test that could be used in a study. Selected Statistical Test
My selected statistic is chi-square (χ2). Chi-square is among the more common statistical tests used in nursing research and is used to compare two categorical variables to determine whether they are related (Barceló, 2018). Specifically, researchers use the chi-square test to determine the strength of association between two categorical variables. Categorical variables can be grouped into categories, including gender, race, and religion. This statistic requires that all variables be at the nominal level of measurement. At the nominal measurement level, a variable is used to name, label, or categorize a specific attribute being measured.
Example in Nursing Research Study
In nursing research, chi-square can be used to compare groups of patients or to study the relationship between two categorical variables (Schober & Vetter, 2019). For example, The chi-square test could be used to compare the self-care, glycemic control, and complications of adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus who receive weekly self-management education and those who receive routine care. In this study, I would want to know if there was a difference in patient outcomes between the groups regarding self-care, glycemic control, and complications. Therefore, I would use chi-square to compare these groups. If there were a difference, I would want to know why. The null hypothesis would be that there is no difference between the groups, and the alternative hypothesis would be that weekly self-management education results in improved self-care, glycemic control, and reduced complications compared to routine care. In summary, the chi-square test helps compare the strength of association between two categorical variables. This statistic requires that the level of measurement of all variables be nominal.
