My personal worldview is crucial in nursing and explains how I live my life – some refer to this as moral philosophy or a guide to right or wrong. I believe we were each created for a specific reason and purpose and that God exists and he is the creator of everything that exists. So, likewise, God made me for a specific purpose, and with God’s help, I know that nursing is my true calling. I am very aware that how I see the world and my personal beliefs can impact the care I give my patients. As a nurse, it is our job to provide care, not pass judgment; but as humans, we all have implicit biases (DeNisco & Barker, 2019). Inherent biases exist because, as humans, we all strive to understand the world through the scope of our lens, views, culture, values, or set of beliefs. DeNisco and Barker talk about how awareness of inherent bias and cultural humility can make nurses more reflective and proactive in their patient interactions. Cultural and spiritual competence is an aspect of nursing that will move the profession to the next level of care. As I continue my leadership role, I want to continue leading my staff to be open-minded, respectful, and communicative and learn from the diverse population we serve.
